Anyone else love the Beretta 92?
For a while now I've been seeing many people on other forums pick on the Beretta and I don't see why. I picked up a used 92FS and it's one of the best handling pistols I've fired. Good weight and low recoil, excellent controls, it just feels solid. I love how easy it is to field strip, this is not a safety issue like a few people have said in the past.
Anyone else a Beretta fan? |

It's the standard issue pistol at work. I'd call these generic problems with the model and not any individual pistol with the caveat that these aren't personally owned firearms so we tend to beat the hell out of them.
I find both the safety and magazine catch awkward to operate one handed. I personally am not concerned with reloading, but the extractors chew on the casings. I'm not particularly thrilled with their precision. The magazines seem to break pretty often, but I'd put that on the unusual amount of abuse they receive. On the plus side, I've never had any problems with jamming, misfeediing, etc. I put 900+ rounds through one day without any complaints. It's okay to use, but I wouldn't buy one. They are easy to strip and clean, though. I'll give you that.

I would put down a lot of the beretta bashing to the fact that there are a metric fuckton of them out there , and therefore more users = more problems- I have heard good things from some friends with one- myself, I am a BHP fan, but thats nothing against the 92

It isn't a *bad* pistol. However, IMHO, it isn't the best pistol out there for the job, and it has some serious drawbacks:
1: It is bulky and cumbersome. It is very wide across the grips, which isn't really necessary considering it only holds 15 rounds. My hand simply doesn't fit comfortably. 2: Horrible safety. It isn't really even a safety, just a decocker that can accidentally be left on, preventing you from being able to shoot. It also works opposite most handgun safeties, and is hard to manipulate with one hand, being small and slide mounted. 3: Horrendous double action trigger pull. 4: The berretta continually breaks on us. It is a rising locking block action, and the locking block really is a weak point....they break all the time. It is easily fixed, if you happen to have an extra locking block on hand, but it doesn't inspire confidence when 4 out of 10 berrettas crap out during a range week. Granted, we ask a lot of our weapons, but they are supposed to be able to handle the abuse. Oh, have also seen a slide crack in two and blow past a shooters face. Everybody I work with prefers Glock. They are ugly, but they don't have a safety/decocker to screw with, nor a double action/single action transition, and they seem to work reliably.

I do. The gun feels *extremely* comfortable in my hands (as opposed to many other pistols) and the actions on the gun work silky smooth. I have no problem using my thumb to flick off the safety--but I suppose it maybe because I have larger hands.
Just a standard reliable pistol I have for home defense. |

One of my buddies has a Beretta PX-4 and its one of the most comfortable guns I've ever shot. I haven't shot it enough to detect any problems with it though.

I had the Beretta 92-fs and loved it for a long time, but when I got my hands on a SA-XD40 (http://www.springfield-armory.com/xd.php?model=2) I dropped the Beretta and have never looked back since.

Beretta M9 was a good, viable gun for GI Joe. All metal (alum / steel), idiot proof operation, minimal maintenance required to make it work, horrendous DA trigger pull prevents actual accuracy (much like the M16/M4, and unlike its pistol predecessor the M1911), too big and heavy to lose, and made by the lowest bidder. The magazines made by "Checkmate" (something like that) Industries were complete shit.
Smart Joes bought a lot aftermarket mags for their guns and comfy holsters. I can imagine that plastic handguns wouldn't be all that great for general military service in the US. Joe breaks 'em because Joe doesn't really respect his weapon all that much. (huge philosophy rant could come of this) Seeing as how I was a unit armorer for a couple of years... I know this as true. ... Beretta did a decent job with "updating" the aging 92 franchise with the Vertec. I like the Vertec grip better (with gloves) and the light rail is a necessary "bling bling" addition. ... I still can't believe that we still use 9mm in military sidearms. Rifle caliber pistols (Bushmaster Carbon-15 that takes AR mags) or pistols with rifle-powered rounds (5.7x28 like the FN Five-seveN) need to make an appearance. We're still essentially using handgun philosophy from the '60s. Last edited by Plan9; 10-10-2007 at 06:39 AM.. |

As a craftsman if someone asks me to do something I know won't work, I don't do it. If you really want me to use solid wire to weld up this rig floor because its faster, go somewhere else, its MY reputation thats gonna be fucked when the weld fails and someone falls, possibly to their death. Now, thats just a drilling rig floor after some idiot gets a little frisky with the hydraulics and crushed the floor with a double stack of casing. Don't build a weapon that wont work, Or a critical weapon component (a magazine isnt a freaking grip panel, mag doesnt work you've got a lump of metal) that will fail leaving someone without the tool(s) critical to preserving their life and or the lives of others. Yes I'm talking to YOU Century Arms, Checkmate, Hi-Point, Glock (its a fucking RECALL, not a product update) et al. I like my 92 kinda. Its a tack driver, no doubt about it. I'd never carry such a thing tho, I believe if was the late great Jeff Cooper who said something along the lines of, "I'd rather have a hatchet then a 9mm at intimate distances." I'm not happy about the goddamn plastic parts on the fucking thing tho. My brother bought it after he got out of the hospital to complete the Martin riggs look he was sporting. The damn thing is pretty hard to have a oopsie with tho, which is prolly a good thing.... I kinda treat mine like a .22 not practical for much, but cheap fun. Quote:
Um, thats cause it doesnt lock into battery, its straight blowback.... and Cromp I'm not sold on the 5.7 Did a lot of insurgents wear kevlar in Iraq? Thats really what the 5.7 is for, is it not? We need a bigger bullet. For the love of christ, I'm even willing to compromise and adopt the .40 short and weak for the capacity nuts out there But why even do that? Springfield has a 13rd .45, Fn is coming out with a 14 round .45 the XD is smaller than the M9, and the FN appears to be as well. Wtf

I'd rather have a primary and secondary that use the same ammo than a decent rifle and a shitty handgun. Reduces ammo load, logistical wet dream, etc. You have to think like the government here... which means price is god not power.
Of course I want a .45 on my hip, but the military would benefit from something more like 5.7x28mm or a carbine pistol variant. If both the primary and sidearm genre took 30 rnd 5.56mm mags... it would be an easier world. The FN Five-seveN is a decent pistol. Two of my friends own them and use them to great effect in rapid fire grouping. The piece has too much extraneous plastic in the design, but I'm not suggesting IT as a US military sidearm. I was suggesting a gun LIKE it, perhaps. Thin aluminum frame with hi cap mag, thin steel slide, ambi control setup like H&K USP, perhaps. Quote:
