hosting stuff....
sorry, i'm completely dumb to how this works
can i host stuff on the internet off my computer?? i'm assuming i would use like the IP as the address with the address thing...... http://123.456.789/filename.avi how on earth does this work? or whats the story.... i have stuff that i would like to share, and being able to put them up soo they can be downloaded though the net would be awsome.... btw, right now i'm posting from xp-pro, but also have another computer with xp-home that i would like to use too |
erm, i wouldn't recommend it.
it's doable, but 1. you'd need to install/set up a server (webserver such as apache for http, or ftp for ftp) 2. you'd need a shitload of upload bandwidth ... i'd say, if you want to share a few random things privately then an ftp server's your best bet. other than that, no, you prolly shouldn't go there :) |
It depends on what you are trying to serve
For web pages a web host is best what kind of pipeline do you have? I ran a FTP server for a while If you make it public....It will get hacked. Give more details and we will be able to come up with a soultion. |
i'm actually sitting on a wireless router, with cable internet... i was thinking of leaving my work laptop on during the day and taking advantage of the T3 connection too.. thats on a wireless router as well
i would like to host a small page maybe, with photos and some video... and maybe php |

It's more reliable and many ISP's block port 80 for a free host ripway is excellant http://www.ripway.com/ They have a good pay plan too You could go the full route and register your domain with godaddy their hosting starts at less than $4.00 a month If your ISP is not blocking port 80 and you still want to run a page apache is the server best for free http://www.apache.org/ It's tricky to set up, but very stable another you may like is at http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.com/ I like their FTP server never used the web server You can get a free redirect to your IP adress at http://www.no-ip.com/ if you need it my old cable company had static IP's my new has dynamic IP's |

Nice, free and open source web server with a simple graphical console for those uninterested in editing weird configuration files. Get a free redirect at http://www.dynip.com/. This will allow you to an address like aquafox.dynip.com you could give to people as your HTTP or FTP server address. alpha phi - why do you make such a claim that an FTP server will get hacked if made public? I've had mine online for about 10 years now (hosted at home and on a major backbone) without any incidents. Yes the FTP protocol passes passwords back and forth in plaintext, but I hate to scare someone away from doing something like that nonetheless. There are a myriad of ways one could use to restrict access to those only AquaFox trusts. http://support.jgaa.com/index.php contains a free to use FTP server that has a graphical interface for you to configure it, for those who do not wish to edit configuration files by hand. Very thorough, secure and lots of help available. |
