Opera and Yahoo! Mail
I have been using Opera since version 2. It has never looked right or operated correctly as it does in Internet Explorer or Firefox.
1. The buttons for Reply, Forward etc when browsing messages look off kilter inside their blue bar. 2. Certain JavaScript events just don't work. Setting your browser to identify itself as IE or Firefox doesn't fix either of these problems. For the new beta version of Yahoo! Mail, you cannot login, period. My hypothesis: it must have something to do with the fact that even though you can identify yourself as IE or Firefox, it user agent string still contains the "Opera" somewhere. I haven't checked what is actually being sent as I don't have a packet sniffer handy. Does anyone else notice anything funny with either version of Yahoo! Mail under Opera (and which version are you using)? Does anyone know how to fix or workaround such issues with Opera? And no, you cannot get an invite to the new beta version of Yahoo! Mail: Yahoo! is not operating their beta test phase in the same manner as Google Mail: you simply get invited when the company chooses to pick your name from their list (you can sign up for the beta phase however). |
I have been using Opera for years as well, and I am familiar with certain sites not working properly.
It sounds like they are using some type of Active X control (M$ developed, great for exploiting IE), which Opera will not process correctly. |

I missed that part. I need to brush up on my reading skills :).
My guess is that it is something in the html code. We have had instances where a site works fine in Opera\IE but not Mozilla, some that work fine in Mozilla\IE but not Opera, and some that work fine in Opera\Mozilla but not IE. In these cases, we have had to dig throught the html coding to solve the problem for our clients. Hopefully Opera releases an update (I currently have 8.51) that addresses the issue like FireFox did; I doubt Yahoo is going to troubleshoot thier html code so it works with Opera. |
It's the Jave code Yahoo is using
I have to bypass my java filter to log in. hotmail is the same way they both use java to write to your login cookie. Opera must not be able to deal with that bit of code |
I'm running Opera version 8 with Java. I also have the the latest Java update, and Yahoo! Mail is running just fine.

777: It may be running just fine, but does it look fine to you? If you are using the current (stable) version of Yahoo! Mail, you'll see the navigation (prev, next, back to messages etc) on the top and bottom of each message you're reading.
Make sure you have the default stylesheets (no user sheets) defined in Opera... try a brand new install, and take a look at that bar. This is what I see: http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3...oo013hh.th.jpg Do you see the same? |
Yes, I see the bar. It looks just fine. I do have to admit that Yahoo! Mail doesn't run perfectly. The Mark button doesn't work. And about once a month, none of the buttons work at all, and I have to sign out and in again to fix it. The mail service works best with Explorer. It might be the type of Jave it uses. I've heard that there's Java and a special Windows/MS Java thingy that works best with Explorer.
