Overclocking?
Ok, anyone have any links to walkthroughs on how to overclock and/or also how to speed up ram? im sure i can speed my comp up, even tho i already have a badass computer, if i could just get that last little ounce of energy, it would be awesome! =P

I'm probably just going to keep typing until I run out of things to babble about and see how many people actually read this. I once ran down a hill, fell down and hurt my elbow; my mom said I would be ok, she kissed it and made it all better. I've run out of things to say now, so if you have read this whole thing, congratulations you get a gold star! |

The only thing I'll say is the OC'ing is 50% luck and 50% precaution. The 50% luck will piss you off beyond belief, so be ready for frustration. It all depends on if your parts are designed for OC'ing, and if they are, if they're actually up to the task. I'd post a guide on OC'ing since I have a lot of experience, but the actual task annoys me so much that I think I won't.

To me overclocking just seems kinda silly. To be able to overclock components and have a solid system, you have to have very high quality stuff. Why then not just get faster components and save yourself the irritation?

Yeah I can see that. And I agree, overclocking can be fun when it works. Just have to keep an eye on that temperature sensor...

overclocking is done cuz manufacturers only say a 3.2 is a 3.2 but the truth is it can be a bit lower or can have more potential to it so what the other guy said luck can be a part of it when you buy your devices. plus if you have a powerful system anyway leave it it's not worth buying the same thing if u messed up

I'd say it's actually 10% luck and 90% caution. I'll overclock a system on request (I don't overcock my own) and when I do, I make sure that the person asking knows that it'll void any warranties first. Then I find the biggest heatsink I can and add heat spreaders to the ram if they don't have it already. I may also upgrade the northbridge heatsink and add a fan if there isn't one there already.
Actually overclocking is a bit tedious, really. I crank up the front side bus by 5 MHz increments, taking at least two hours to burn in and test between increases. I watch the temperature and generally keep it under 50C, since at full burn the temperature can go up 10 or 15 degrees from an idle reading and I want to be safe. There's not a whole lot more to it than that. If you really decide that this is something you should do, just take it slow and be careful.

Apparently, my motherboard comes with something called AI NOS, which will overclock your system only if the processor load becomes full. The idea is that if you're not using your processor to the fullest then you don't need the processing power at that moment and it's useless to overclock. Why risk system stability for no gain in speed?
