SiN builds her puter!
As promised, with pics  This is not meant to be a proper thorough tutorial, just more to give a general idea, and show how fucking easy! it really is. I apologise in advance for the crap cable-ties I used, I forgot to bring some with, and this is all I could find at home. Let us begin. :D ESD Shoesss - you need(should be using!) some sort of ESD protection before touching your parts. usually recommended is a wrist-strap. i just happened to have shoes from my old job. i know, real helpful when i'm sitting on the carpet while building.. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0187.JPG inside the empty case http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0183.JPG remove the 5.25 drive bay covers (note: I wound up putting the RW drive in the 3rd one down, instead of the 2nd. Why, later.) http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0185.JPG 2x optical and 2x hdd http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0186.JPG slide the opticals in from the front. reader on top, burner below. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0188.JPG Then, put in your hdd's (no pic) Screws! The fine-threaded are for the opticals, the coarse-threaded for the hdd's. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0189.JPG Then I screwed in the PSU (I prefer doing it when the case is standing). http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0190.JPG Case is laying on it's side now, easier to do the rest this way. These things are hard to get in sometimes, a slot-head screwdriver helps. Oh, and break out your expansion slots before putting the board in, there may be capacitators close by if you do it later. then, you must be careful, esp. if they're hard to get out like these were. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0191.JPG Put the board-screw-holders in. ONLY AND EXACTLY! where you need them. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0193.JPG ... just randomly staring at the board before thermal-pasting it and putting the HSF on... http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0192.JPG the board is now screwed in... the screws need to match the thing you're screwing into. these used fine-threaded screws. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0194.JPG now we connect the front-panel stuff what goes where is usually printed on the board, and is in the manual. which direction depends on the case, but try writing-side down first. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0195.JPG excess cable is back behind the 3.5 thing. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0196.JPG ATX is plugged in and cabled away from the cpu fan. those silver cables, all the cables on this PSU really, are rather stiff. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0197.JPG IDE cables plugged in and as out-of-the-way as possible NOTE: there is a problem here, I had to fix later. whomever designed the board put the IDE slots in backwards. I just assumed ide1 on the bottom and ide2 on the top. ya know, since that's how most people build puters  Wrong! This is why the burner is in the 3rd slot - the cable is like 2 cm's too short to reach the bottom ide. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0199.JPG Bela the cat is not interested in helping. :( http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0200.JPG power cables plugged in and neatened up a bit. that hanging extension thingy is for the fans on the side panel under the window. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0202.JPG like so. http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0203.JPG random view through the window. this thing needs some pretty lights, eh? ;) http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0204.JPG and here's the happy geek with her freshly-built sex-machine!!! (but, you can't really see the puter.. oops! :o http://www.digitalicious.org/puter_pics/DSCF0217.JPG So, there ya have it! :) I'll be fixing things up a bit later I'm sure, lighty-things and better proper cable-ties and whatever else she needs. |
/me wolf whistles at SiN's new computer, and at SiN :D
Damn, you were right, that 'puter is a sex machine! |
You left out the sleeping with coffee cup during install pictures. :)
Seriously, good deal. Let us know how it's working. Was the blood from this job or something else? Edit: Hey, I just realized I used that very case in white to build my sister's computer about a year ago. Black would have our choice if they'd had it. Looks good! (All three of you of course! <img src="http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif">) |
Awesome! Very helpful especially for me as I've just been getting into computer D.I.Y. stuff.
Also great to see your face! |
I'm impressed! One thing though, even with ESD shoes on, it's better to place all your parts on a wood surface rather than carpet. Carpet will build up static quickly. How many PCs have you built so far?
|

That blood looks fresh and shiny. Which part bit you? |
yeah, i know carpet's a bad choice, but the only non-carpet floors in mom's house are in the kitchen, bath, and laundry. /shrug
and yes, the blood's from the case, i think it happened during the breaking out of the metal that covers the 5.25 bays. no big deal tho really. such things happen sometimes. In my life, i've built ... a lot of computers. considering I used to do it as my job, 9 months of work x 5 days a week x ~15 computers a day ... so yeah, i could do it in my sleep ;) she runs great, btw :D got most of what i need installed i think .. everything's as fast as I need my puter to be. still haven't tested any games with it, or any other stuff to really make her work hard. in time ... ;) |
Nice to know that I'm not the only one that can't build a computer without a blood sacrifice of some sort.
|
If I had a penny for everytime I sliced my fckin hand on those stupid metal inserts for drive bays.. I like the story, though. :)
(And yea, you definitely need some riced out blue LED cables and maybe a few LED fans.. ) |
I've got that exact case, but in silver. Really good deal for the price on newegg. I put two blue LED fans in the side. I'm going to drill a 80mm blowhole in the top and put in a red LED fan there.

Wow, now I won't feel like an inferior idiot when I scratch my hands up inside a machine....
Great case :D Now run memtest!!! |
Looking good!! I like how you scraped a chunk of you off while putting it together. I actually cut my hand at the exact same spot when putting my computer together. It bled heavily. It's like a damned warzone trying not to cut yourself within some PC cases.

Meh, newer cases it aint so bad (except when I pushed my forefinger through the ethernet hole on the backplate, god that hurt), but the worst is like upgrading RAM in an old machine in the laziest possible manner. You scrape your hands up like a mofo :/
|
Hah. I always seem to cut myself on heatsinks. Pointy sons of bitches.
The build is sexy, though. Very clean and professional. I like the last picture, especially, though it could definitely use a little more "puter." :p |

SiN!!! Great job! I have not offered enough support for you, so I apologize. But hey, looks like you didn't need it anyway because your machine looks just fine. And you even have some scars to prove it! Impressive. I'm sure the OS load and everything else went well. If not, let us know! juju |
Let the overclocking begin !!!oneone
|
Any particular reason you put the burner on the bottom? I've always put mine on top *shrug*
|
any particular reason you always put your burners on the top, SMeth?
I put it on the bottom because 1. I use the dvd-rom more 2. that's how i learned to do it when i worked building puters. burner always on the bottom. works for me. /shrug :) |
Very cool computer - nice pictures :) Glad to see it all works great and looks slick.

I think everyone gets bit when working on a computer. I always manage to ding myself up somehow.
Wish I had the money to build my own :( Really, all I need's a new mobo and memory. Someday. Someday. Lookin' good, SiN ;) |

1. If long enough cables, easier to hide the damn cables 2. Easier access for lazy persons when you don't have to bend over so much when your puter is on the floor. |
Burners go on the bottom here. No particular reason why, it's just how I've always done it.
I'd put the number of computers I've built in the hundreds. I don't usually bother with ESD, I just make sure to touch a faucet or switch plate or something else grounded to discharge before I get started. I hear the bracelets work well though. All in all, looking good there SiN. And the computer looks good too! |
I can't remember the last time I used an ESD bracelet. And yeah... I've cut myself on more cheap cases than I can count. Good looking build. BTW, can you post a parts list? I'm just curious :)
PS - I put the burner on top. /shrug I have no idea why. But I do end up using it more for ripping and the like. |
SiN you have ESD shoes? What handbag do they go with? :)
Nice machine. Now you make me want a new 'puter too. |

it was in the other thread, but i suppose I shoulda reposted it here. Athlon 64 3000+ Venice $146 Abit AV8 - $99.50 (before rebate) Corsair Value DDR 400 1 gig kit (2x512) - $89.75 Liteon 16P9S dvd-rom - $20 Liteon 1693S dvd-rw - $40 Enermax Noisetaker 370w - $44 Raidmax Astro Black Case (the front is silver ) - $30 all from newegg. the hdd's I already had are samsung spinpoint 160 gig and an old seagate 120 gig vidcard (is crap, i know..) is a Radeon 9550. I'll likely be upgrading it, but not for a couple months. I also have (not pictured) a 21" Trinitron (IBM version, black) Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keybo Microsoft Intellimouse Optical and my most recent purchase .. printer is a Canon Pixma IP4000. it's black and silver, and looks pretty sexy next to the puter. :D .... once I get my desk .. (and into my new apartment) this is gonna be some sexy shit. I gots plans. I'm taking my old desk and painting it white ... and probably putting an aluminum top on the desktop .. it's all gonna look minimal and modern and stuff. I will post pics, I promise ;) |
I've built about 8 computers, I think. Every time I've cut myself.
The most amusing time, I was building a sexy sexy high spec machine for an accountancy office (4 hard drives, 2 optical drives, a floppy drive, two gigabit ethernet card, 64 bit socket 939, the works.) I cut myself taking the blanking plate out for the mobo ports in order to put my mobos one in instead of the cases. It took a chunk of skin out and really hurt, I was clutching my finger hopping around shouting "cock, cock, cock, fucking cock." and doing some strange monkey flailing dance. Turn round to see about half a dozen open mouth accountants staring... |
