Podcasts: Big waste of Time or what?

I have downloaded lots of different PODCASTS lately;
some with music ,some with tech talk and some devoted
to so called erotic stories and so far it's all been
a big waste of time. What's your opinion of this
latest thing to do with the MP3 player? Big waste of
time or have you found one Podcast that was worth
listening to? :o

I think they're cool.

It's just like a radio show. Or a book on tape.

What I don't like is how POP(ular) they've become, because then everybody and their brother gets one. There's alot of high quality ones, you just have to look for em.

i like the morning stories on wgbh.org - they are cute little feel good stories and the host of the show seems like a fun guy, doesnt take himself too seriously.

I'm a big fan of Coverville. I'm also sampling a few erotic podcasts, the people at Fetish Flame are certainly broadening my horizons.

I didn't really understand the point of podcasts - it's just somebody talking into a microphone or whatever and uploading it as an mp3 - but once they introduced their availability in iTunes, I realized that it's more about the way that they're made available.

It's just like when Apple introduced GarageBand - once you make a type of technology easy and accessible, you'll get everybody from professionals to rank amateurs using it. But if you can filter through, there's some good stuff on there.

My favorite podcast is Accident Hash. I've picked up lots of good indie music through there.

I've recently gotten pretty into podcasts. There are some good ones.

I listen to:

This Week in Tech (yay for Leo Laporte!)
Soccergirl, Incorporated (kinda dumb, but in a fun way)
Open Source Sex (Violet Blue, occasional Fleshbot guest blogger, covering all sorts of sex topics)
Polyamory Weekly (Way cool, very sanity-inducing podcast for polyfolk)
Spacemusic (EXCELLENT electronic ambient/downtempo podcast from Rotterdam)
Zentopia Transmission (Another electronic chillout podcast)
Al Franken's Air America Radio (a podcast of his radio show)

I didn't bother to hunt down URLs for these, but you can google them, or they're all on iTunes, or you can hit podcastalley.com and search there.

I'm way into podcasts, right now I'm on:
This Week in Tech (TWiT Army baby!)
This Week in Science
Security Now!
MuggleNet (So I'm a Potter fan)
Dawn and Drew
Diggnation (From the makers of Digg.com)
Endgadget

BTW ratbastid, what are polyfolk?

RonRyan85 09-01-2005 05:49 PM

Okay..maybe there are some good ones...Heard a few by Violet
Blue with her naughty sex talk and others but I need a faster
internet provider because most of my Podcasts cut off before
I can fully download them and I get the message: "I.P.Timed out".

pixelbend 09-02-2005 01:27 PM

most of them have a bit torrent feed that you can get.

RonRyan85 09-02-2005 05:39 PM

I definitely agree that Polyamory weekly is great. Of course, I'm biased since I know Minx and Graydancer. :D

Cool! I'm doing an interview with Minx on Thursday about poly breakups. She read a letter from me on her second-to-last episode (I'm going by "R" on that show, short for "ratbastid").

pixelbend: polyfolk = people who practice polyamory.

Sorry for the late reply, BitTorrent is a file sharing program that a lot of content creators are using to distribute their stuff. Get the free program Azureus (or any other BT client) and get a .torrent file from the creator or look on a torrent tracker for content.

BT works by sharing the bandwidth of all of the people who are currently or have already downloaded the file. Just keep the torrent running after you have finished the download and you are helping others get the file as well.

Cynthetiq 09-07-2005 05:00 AM

eh... i didn't have time so much for talk radio which i enjoy but podcasts make it like Tivo, on my time and schedule not theirs.

wallaby72 09-07-2005 08:35 AM

podcasts are a great way to keep up with the news and events back in australia while I'm on the other side of the world. Especially like to tune into Dr Karl's science program from the ABC.

The best part is they get automatically downloaded onto my ipod and I listen to them in the car on the way to work instead of the lame radio stations they have here in the UK.

Okay thanks for the reply and info on Bit Torrent clients. (Where
did you hear about this? I downloaded several PODCAST programs:
IPODDER, Obed? and others but I never heard of BIT TORRENT CLIENTS.)

Seems like I was having some luck with my podcast downloads and then
I kept getting "Internet feed timed out",so I said "the Hell with it!"

pixelbend 09-08-2005 04:52 AM

Bit Torrent is not only used for podcasts and IPTV, you can also get hold of "other" types of content. (If you get my meaning)

RallyEX 09-12-2005 09:04 PM

I love certain podcasts, but like others said... some are just awful.

Here's my list of favorites:
This Week In Tech
TravelCommons (great travel podcast with interesting content)
Formula Pod (F1 commentary and race recaps)
5 Speed Cassette (Coverage of Pro Cycling, WRC and F1 Racing)
Open Source Sex with Violet Blue
Engadget

And a few others.
