Optimizing Windows for games?

Mmmmmmmkay. So I'm running a beast a computer, yet I loaded F.E.A.R yestarday and I seem to be lagging out hardcore, and thats not the only game that does it, the video sequences in Command and Conquer: Generals fuck up to. For some reason, im thinking that my comp is not optimized for its hardware or some shit. (i could be talking out my ass).

Anyone know of any tools to optimize performance for gaming, this is what I'm running.

Amd Athlon 64 3200+
Gigabyte K8 Triton K8NS Ultra-939 Mobo
1gb. Corsair DDR Dual Channel
Gigabyte GeForce FX 6800 GT
250gb SATA 7200rpm HD (Can't remember who makes it)
Liteon DVD-RW DL
Liteon DVD-ROM/CD-RW
Sound Blaster Live!
Windows XP fully updated.
DirectX 9.0c

any help?

I've run out of things to say now, so if you have read this whole thing, congratulations you get a gold star!

Be sure all your drivers are updated: mobo, video, sound etc.

What settings do you use for those two games? You trying to run them at 1600x1200 with everything maxed or what?

We need more info.

What helps me is to make sure no other programs are running. I sometimes stop all IM programs and especially file sharing programs. Basically all i have running is the game and background services. And if you have dual monitors, i disable the one I'm not gonna use. That helps me out a lot.

I was running it at 1280x1024 (native resolution for my screen) but yes, most of the stuff was maxed. there are no other programs other than Norton and the Nvidia controller running in the background, all drivers are updated, single monitor.

In some games I turn of AA and shadows when i experience a lag. It doesnt affect the visuals all that much and is a big boost in smoothness.

Change your video settings for those games to low settings and see if the lag has improved any better. If it did, change the settings one by one to improve it. When you come across one of the settings that suddenly cause the game to lag, let us know, Nvidia's software should be able to allow you to tweak for that particular setting and remove the lag itself.
