Xbox hookup with my TV card?
First off, I dont know dick about computers. So I have a dual TV tuner with S-Video, Composite and cable hookups. It is an emuzed Angel card, came with my new Dell. I bought a cable for my xbox that splits the signal to an Svideo cable and regular RCA sound cables, both of which I have connected to my TV tuner. Now heres the problem: How the HELL do I get it to play through my computer???? Its all hooked up, signal is going through, but I have no idea what I need to make it display on my monitor! Is there some software I need? My tv tuner didnt come with shit for a manual, I had to take the casing off just to see what kind of card it was! Help me TFP'ers!

I am not that familar with that card, but i know for other manuf's of tv tuner type cards you need to open the tv tuner software and change the input from say coxial to s-video, componet..etc. And some of the ati cards you have to go into the display properties to change were the primary image goes when playing a video, like it will go to the monitor or the s-video connection output. but not to both at the same time. are the cables labeled inputs? i 've made that mistake as well, having it plugged into the output and not the inputs. good luck.

You're saying you don't have any software to drive the tuner? What OS are you using? If Linux, I can recommend "zapping". Search for it at Freshmeat.
I'm surprised that your tv tuner card didn't come with some sort of TV desktop application. You sure there wasn't a CD in the box that you overlooked? Or did you buy it second-hand? |

Just a guess - If he doesn't know dick about computers, then I suppose he wouldn't know much about Linux.
Just check around your dell software. It's gotta be on one of those fifty bajillion disks they give you (they still do that, right?), and if not ... call them up :-/ |

I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition. The card came preinstalled with my new (2 weeks old) compter from Dell. I went back through the 50 bajillion disks, reinstalled everything pertaining to the TV card, and the ONLY peice of software is some shitty diagnostic utility that says something to the extent of "This Device Is Working Correctly". Thats it. The only 'TV Desktop'-like application I have is the TV feature of XP Media Center, which will not recognize the signal coming through the Svideo connections, only though the cable input. Dell dosent know jack about this video card. No computer store has ever heard of it. I'm assuming it is a renamed version of another because even when I google it I dont get shit except a crude jpeg about the inputs, which ARE inputs and not outputs. What good IS this thing I paid an extra 249 dollers for, exactly??

I tried about 30 programs before I found DScaler. It allows me to play with no lag, but the quality leaves something to be desired. I played around with half a million filters and other do dads within the program and got a "decent" picture, but its nothing compared to my roomates HDTV system. I know my monitor is cabable of alot more (NEC Multisync LCD-Best I could find) so it must be hardware limited by the TV card. If anyone knows how to improve my quality using DScaler please chime in! And thanks for the help everyone!

The image quality of TV tuner will never be as good as what your monitor is capable of. This is because the resolution of TV is very low - something like 640x480, and the resolution of your monitor is probably much higher. Especially on LCD sccreens.
I learnt this here a couple months ago when I was asking about image quality of my TV tuner card. There isn't really anything you can do to make the image quality any better, other than scaling the TV's window down to it's natural resolution. Image quality looks great on mine when I put it to about 800x600. You mentioned your friend's HDTV system. Is he using a TV card in his computer or something? Or does he have an actual HDTV? There is such thing as a HDTV tuner that you can buy for your computer. But it isn't quite the same as a normal TV tuner card. A HDTV tuner doesn't go inside of your computer. It's a box that you plug your cable (or video game) into one end, and your monitor into the other. It turns your monitor screen into a television. It isn't like a TV card in your computer where you have to load software and get a scalable/movable window; it's full screen all the time. I've never had one or used one, so I can't really say anything about the quality of these, or any details about how they work. I've just seen them for sell on shelves. |
