Game compatability help

I'm running Windows XP and I've installed an old game, Championship Manager 3, which was meant for Win98.
When I try and run the game it says:

Quote:
Incorrect version of Windows
Sorry, not supported on NT
Is there anyway of getting around this? Or should I consign it to Ebay?

Right click on the executable or shortcut, go to properties. Click on Compatibility and select Win 98/ME. Hopefully this will work for you.

You could also try running it in DOS through DOSBox. Since 98 is based on DOS, the program might be DOS-compatible. Eh, it's worth a shot anyways.

I tried this and now when I try and run the program it says that 'its encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for any inconvenience.'

I tried this too and it says 'This program cannot be run in DOS made'

When you buy the game now, it is compatible with XP. I've tried looking for a suitable patch but without any luck. Damn, this is annoying!

In the compatability modes, have you tried running it in other compatibilities (Win95)?

game probably is trying to interact directly with the hardware so the HAL is being a dick (just like in the movies!!!)

if you really really want to play this game, try running a virtual machine that runs win98 and it should be hunky dory.

Thanks I'll google it.
It'll probably be easier just to buy it again

Crazy

Have you checked the game companies site? They sometimes release patches to run on Win9x programs on NT based machines.

Another option - if you have VMWare or VirtualPC - is to create a virtual PC on your computer, install Win98 to it, and play through that. It's not the ideal solution, but if you have either of those pieces of software available, it'll work, as the OS (and then the game) believes it's actually running on its own computer, when really it's just an application inside of your XP desktop.

If your HDD is NTFS create a partition and install win 98 on there. Then you can have two OS's, one for normal use and one for just the game.

Windows98 won't install on NTFS partitions - it requires FAT32 (which is a horrid filesystem, for the record)
