Windows XP Home v. Windows 2000?
I'm getting a refurb eMachines that comes pre-loaded with Windows XP Home Edition. From what I understand, Home Edition is built on ME, while Pro is built on 2000. My computer now came with ME, which sucked balls, so I loaded it with 2000, which I really enjoy (other than the fact that you can't keep programs running in multiple profiles at the same time).
I was wondering; do you recommend I keep XP Home? Or do I just get rid of it and load up 2000? It'll be awhile before I receive the refurb in the mail, so you guys have a lot of time to compare and contrast. Just no flame wars please. :) Thanks! |
The Home edition is not built off of ME and the differences between the Pro and Home are minimal.
Keep XP Home |
question really is what do you do? if it is a single machine connected to the net, home will do what you want. My understanding is that it is basically XP Pro with the networking dumbed down.

Here is the comparison between XP home and XP pro from MS: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...choosing2.mspx and more, Windows XP Home Edition * Contains basic support for security among multiple users. * Built-in support for peer-to-peer networking, but only for up to five computers. * The backup utlity is not installed by default, but is included on the CD. Windows XP Professional Edition * Includes extended support for security between multiple users on the same machine. * Better support for peer-to-peer networking, plus support for joining a "Windows NT/2000/2003 domain." * The backup utlity is installed by default. * The Professional edition includes the following components not found in the Home edition: o Administrative Tools (in the Start Menu and Control Panel) o Automated System Recovery (ASR) o Boot Configuration Manager o DriverQuery o Group Policy Refresh Utility o Multi-lingual User Interface (MUI) add-on o NTFS Encryption Utility o Offline Files and Folders o OpenFiles o Performance Log Manager o Remote Desktop o Scheduled Tasks Console o Security Template Utility o Taskkill o Tasklist o Telnet Administrator* Provides support for multi-processor systems (2 or 4 CPUs), Dynamic Disks, Fax. |
I'd take 2000 Pro over XP Pro anyday. But that's mainly based on the fact that I hate the fisher price look of XP. (yes I know you can go to classic view)
|
In my experience XP is way more stable than 2000.
|
I use 2000 at work and XP at home......I'd take XP anyday....Im living for the day that the IT department decides I can upgrade to XP pro

Who the fuck told you that one? Whoever said that needs to be http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/customa...tar47007_8.gif ME was the LAST operating system based on the 9.x kernel, and if it ever makes a comeback i'll tie my legs to a tree. Yeah. All versions of XP and 2k are based on the NT kernel. Thus, it's fair to say that XP is to ME as 2k is to win98 (as 98 was 9.x) Quote:

So, majority says keep Windows XP Home?
I guess my only concern is: Quote:
