New Video Card Problem
 

Howdy everyone,

I have an interesting problem. I just bought a Raedon 9550 for my computer. I installed the card and the newest drivers. This is what happens:

After rebooting after the install of the drivers, the Windows splash screen comes up as usual, then one of two things happens:
1) The monitor will go into power saving mode and nothing will happen after that or;
2) It will get to the Windows XP Welcome screen, and when I click on the Administrator account the screen goes blank, and the monitor goes into power saving mode.

Its a brand new card. Its a brand new 500w power supply. Machine is running Windows XP Pro. Anybody have an idea on why this wont work?

Did you disable the onboard video in the BIOS?

Can you safe-boot into VGA mode?

Did you uninstall the previous video drivers before installing the 9550 drivers?

Is the monitor connected directly to the card or are you using adapters, extensions, or a KVM switch?

That one's especially important, particularly with ATI cards. ATI drivers are famous for being pissy on a good day, and if there are other drivers floating around they tend to do very bizarre things.

Yes.

Yes, no problems here what so ever.

Did you uninstall the previous video drivers before installing the 9550 drivers?
Yes. Uninstalled by going to device manager and deleting all Nvida and ATI devices.

Is the monitor connected directly to the card or are you using adapters, extensions, or a KVM switch?
The monitor is directly plugged into the video card.

Exodus, I'm nowhere near a desktop or ATI software so can't provide effective instructions. Sounds like you need to drop your resolution and/or vertical refresh frequency.

The software should have auto-detected your monitor and capabilities, but you may have a leftover resolution/refresh helper utility forcing incompatible settings.

BTW, uninstalling the devices may not have picked up everything associated with the old card. Use add/remove programs first. Still no guarantee, but it'll pick up non-driver utilities that like to hang around and cause problems.

Safe boot to VGA again, check your taskbar, installed software, etc. Worst case you can force settings blind from the keyboard but it's easier to start where you can see.

one time a friend changed to reso on hes computer to a way to high reso and hes monitor couldnt read it. But insafe mode i was able to fix the reso. Not sure if this will help you but i though maybe this would hehe.
