/cry Help
Ok so I recently reformated my comp due to a virus.
Downloaded drivers and all. Running smoothly but for some reason I canot access certain sites... Sites such as ebay.com overgrow.com can't even get to microsoft to download service pack or update :(. Help appreciated! |
There could be a ton of reasons for this.
- (your own) Proxy server not doing what it's supposed to. - Browser Hijack - in a dos box (run "cmd"), can you ping those sites ("ping www.ebay.com")? - Internet explorer's security settings - firewall being too restrictive. What do you see when you want to go to one of these sites? For example, when trying windows update, do you see a "page not found", or are you unable to find/download updates once on the page? |
I can't ping ebay so I ran adaware and the problem is still not resolved!
|
Mmmm... okay.. how is your network set up? Are you behind a router or a firewall at all?
Do you have Java and Flash updates installed? Are you running WinXP? |
is cookies enabled?
|
did you jiggle the cables?
|
Is your DNS working? For example 66.135.192.123 is the IP of www.ebay.com. Try to ping 66.135.192.123.
|
None of the sites you listed respond to pings, try yahoo.com although it sounds to me like your DNS is working.
Check your hosts file - should be c:\windows\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\host(s?) If there are entries for the sites you can't hit then thats your problem, comment them out or remove the entries and you should be golden. I've seen spyware hose the hosts file and if you didn't actually format but instead installed over the existing system this could be your problem. |

Can you ping yahoo.com?
|
Yea but I can also go to yahoo...
|
OK, so you have functional DNS which didn't seem to be the problem but it's a good place to start.. Try this:
click start -> run and paste this string into the box: notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and click ok, then copy and paste the contents of that file here. |
