Acrobat Alternative?

So basically my university (UNC) insists on distributing damn near everything in PDF format. Fine and good, and I understand the reasons, but here is the problem: I hate Acrobat with a burning, undying passion. Slow, bloated to hell, and manages to make every machine Ive ever used chug and grind, especially when it is starting up. I hate waiting 30 seconds for Acrobat to start up just so I can check to see what the lecture topic is for the day.

Does anyone know of any alternative, lightweight PDF readers out there? Is there even such a thing?

Thanks for the help.

So, did you even look at google before posting here?

Easy way to search is to type "pdf reader -adobe" in the google search area.

FoxIt PDF Reader: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
PDF Reader 2.3: http://www.cadkas.de/downengpdf5.php
xpdf: http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/ *RECOMMENDED*
eXPert PDF Reader: http://www.download.com/eXPert-PDF-R...-10354227.html

Yes, I was looking for suggestions though. I prefer not to install loads of random crap, and was hoping someone had some experience with one they could tell me about.

There's also an Adobe reader speed up program out there.
It trims down all the DLLs and registry entries and loads the program REALLY quickly.

One here - freeware:

Heavens forbid...to come to a discussion board in search of discussion?

I haven't used an actual acrobat alternative, but I have used speed up programs similar to WillyPete's suggestion and have been pleased.

There's also a slimmed down version of acrobat out there for download (no third party programs :) ).... I can't remember it off the top of my head, but I'll look for it and post accordingly.

Preview is a really good pdf reader for the Mac.

Foxit is one for the PC that looks good.
