SP2 is coming, whether you want it or not

UPDATE: Time is running out! Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 is only available for a period of 240 days (8 months) from August 16, 2004. At the end of this period (after April 12, 2005), Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems.
I'm not sure how this is going to work, but apparently MS is going to shove SP2 down our throats next Tuesday. I have a laptop with SP2 that has no problems, and also a desktop with SP1. I have no plans right now to upgrade the desktop. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not have decisions like that made for me.

the_marq 04-07-2005 11:46 AM

I wonder how this will impact me as I still have not even installed SP1 on any of my XP machines.

Considering the amount of traffic my router blocks EVERY DAY by machines infested with viruses because they're missing security patches I could see this as having some very positive effects, though I agree with wondering how they're going to implement it, as for having the decision made for you, you gave that right away when you agreed to the EULA. I'm pretty sure that there is a clause that reserves the software as the IP of Microsoft and they reserve the right to make "necessary" changes as they see fit.

Also, if you're using an AMD processor you'd much rather be on SP2 anyway, much better support for the chips :) I just disable the Security Center features and go about my merry way.

That's odd. I don't think I've heard of any misadventures with SP1, and it (supposedly) makes your PC more stable/fast/OMG etc.

Maybe I can just tell my firewall to block microsoft....

What's the big deal against SP2? I'm using it and I haven't gotten much problems at all. Anybody care to list their grudge against M$soft?

liquidlight 04-07-2005 01:20 PM

Update: They're not removing your choice, having reread the tech article this delay mechanism only applies to corporate entities running WinXP that have the AutoUpdate feature enabled :) This system overrode the AutoUpdate so that SP2 wouldn't be applied automatically with other critical updates. Now that it's been 8 months MS is disabling the capability for the override and anybody using the AutoUpdate feature will now receive SP2 unless it's bene previously installed by the admin/management tools (which is what should have been done in the interim). They're still evil, but MS doesn't like getting sued apparently!

bendsley 04-07-2005 01:39 PM

Corporate networks that have some sort of push mechanism installed to push out updates will not be affected by this. Of course, this is being controlled via group policies and not WindowsUpdate on the clients themselves.

The site listed below will explain more than I care to write in here:

This just further enforces the fact that when you buy (lease) Microsoft you do not own anything. How can anyone accept this behavior when it is a known fact that SP2 breaks software and machines? I understand that well written programs shouldn't break, but how can microsoft really think that this is acceptable? Installing SP2 should still be an option.

Most software has patches for SP2 by now. I'd rather not take the chance of breaking anything by adding SP2 to my desktop.

Because most people are retarded and do not install the updates automatically and therefore become carriers of viruses and pass them along to millions of others.

superiorrain 04-09-2005 12:59 AM

I installed it but in knocked out my CD burner and try as i do, i can get the thing to work, something about the kernal drive not recognising it. So at the moment at least i live my life without a burner but safe in the knowledge that SP2 is installed.

If anyone has any ideas about getting the burner installed again, let me know. Currently it won't even let me install from the CD-ROM. Strange goings on.

They're not "shoving it down our throats". They're putting a patch in with fixes for crucial problems, and security updates in their software that NEED to be put in.

Would you prefer them not fixing any problems at all, and seeing how long their software lasts before it's completly fucked by people finding holes in their system?

A good analogy, would be like most online games. If there's a problem, they're going to patch it, and you're not given a choice whether or not you want to download it, because there can be serious problems caused in the game if left unchecked.

I don't see a problem with it at all.

Tandem 04-09-2005 02:12 AM

Speaking for myself, I've never had a problem with either SP1 or SP2.
Regardless of what we 'grains of sand' think about weather or not anything is being forced down out throats - chew on a peice of rubber for a moment.

I'm sure that Henry Ford didn't cop such ignorant crap from the public after he produced his second, thrid or fouth car for the masses. Unless you are willing to sit down and write your own OS kernel - and make it available to the masses to criticise; then accept that the reality that life is not as perfect as you see it through your rose coloured glasses.

All OS's are extremely complex jigsaw puzzles, to expect a release without bugs/problems is to continue to wear those rose coloured glasses. If Microsoft did not provide and enforce the SP regime that they do, then they would be commercially irrisponsible and be liable for massive losses, should they occurr.

You have a choice to install SP1 / SP2. Like you have the choice to service your car, or change the bald tyres on your bike. If in the end it's forced upon you, then swallow the pill and keep walking.

That's my two cents. :)

soccerchamp76 04-09-2005 10:27 AM

I could consider myself lucky, but I too, have not had any problems with either SP1 or SP2. It works best installed on a fresh system, however.

zero2 04-17-2005 11:38 PM

If you goto start-->run-->services.msc, then stop & disable Automatic Updates, it will probably keep sp2 off your system too.
