negative firefox experiences?

Well,,, everyone kept saying how much better firefox was than IE, so I decided to get it... it has a lot of bells and whistles, but I found it SO unstable that it became almost unuseable. I tried it for about a week, and it would crash all the time, if I had multiple screens running it woul djump between them randomly, it froze often....

In terms of all the options it has, I did find it better than IE, but in terms of using it, it just fell over so often that it was impossible.

Has anyone else had similar experiences, or is it just me?

Are you using many plugins? I see very few FF crashes. Maybe once a week among multiple systems. I did have one install that behaved very badly but it was a 1.0 update from .9, and never worked well until I cleaned it out completely and started fresh with 1.0.

I've never had any problems. If you are a frequent IE user, your comp might just be screwed becaue of that.

What are your system specs?

Mozilla is a little more system heavy, so if you only have 128 megs of ram, or something like that, its probably not for you(especially with multiple windows)

phukraut 03-19-2005 04:47 PM

Which version of Firefox are you using (which build)?
Which plugins and extensions have you installed?
What OS are you running (and system specs as asked above)?

I've used Firefox since 0.7 or so (I think it was called Phoenix back then), and have never had such problems. I also use Firefox on both WindowsXP and a couple of Linux varieties. I never installed untested nightlies though. The only times I had any real problems were when I either installed a new version without removing the old first, or when I installed a badly written extension or plugin. I could say, with this new version, 20050301 Firefox/1.0.1, running with a few extensions that I love, that Firefox is more stable than IE6SP1a.

I've seen an uptick in the crashes in Firefox since I install 1.x (I now have 1.01) I have been tempted to go back to 0.7 or so because I had NO crashes with the older versions. I imagine it must be something on my system, not FF, but ever since the upgrade to 1 it has been down hill for me.

The only problem that I have with firefox is that every now and then when I click on a window to open it opens a different window, its no biggie cause I just have to reclick the window that I wanted in the first place. Also when I download stuff the first download never works... I always have to redownload it, then it works fine. Overall I say the benifits way outweigh the negatives. IE was such a pain for me and firefox has been great.

I've never had firefox to crash with 1-2 months of use...However, It does use a lot more memory than IE, and occasionally runs slow.

Oh, and another thing I don't like about FireFox, is some streaming sites only work with IE ( launch.yahoo.com ).

braisler 03-20-2005 04:07 AM

The only problem that I have with Firefox is that some websites either won't work with it (my company's health insurance management page) or will cause it to freeze (mail.com). I don't blame Firefox for this, but rather, the poorly coded pages. Maybe yours is a similar problem. Do you notice that it freezes or crashes when you log on to a certain page?

I started using firefox a couple of months ago and it was great until recently when I downloaded some sort of update for it. Now when I try to run it I get an error. I've yet to find a single browser that is sufficient on it's own and have four installed on my computer at work for that reason.

Slavakion 03-20-2005 05:58 AM

I've only had two problems with it. Firefox seems to dislike quicktime, and sometimes my bookmarks will disappear. Speaking of that, it's about time to back them up again.

Strange Famous 03-20-2005 06:01 AM

I have XP, and I have added on a few of the extra features. The version of Firefox I have is 1.00 I think. I dont know how much RAM my PC has but its only 1 year old so it probably is ok, but it copes ok with IE. I initially downloaded FF when it first came out, and that worked ok, but I got the upgraded version, and like the guy above thats when I started having problems with it.

ShaniFaye 03-20-2005 06:23 AM

its only crashed twice on me...both times where when I tried to acess teh tfp chat room via the link at the top of the page...so I went back to mirc...other than that and some pages not working (yahoo avatar page for example) I havent had any problems

Irishsean 03-20-2005 07:21 AM

I haven't ever had a crash with FireFox, and I go to some crazy sites! Granted, I keep my machine a lot cleaner than most, I don't install anything unless I absolutely need it!

shadowalker 03-20-2005 07:39 AM

I to have been using it sence phoenix and have yet to have a crash. But any software can act diffrently on any system. Luck of the draw i guess.

Cynthetiq 03-20-2005 07:40 AM

I haven't had a crash with it.

But after using it on my main system and sampling it for a week, I wasn't all that impressed in difference from what I was able to get using MyIE. Since I already had all my systems setup I didn't find it compelling enough of software to warrant me upgrading all of them, since it couldn't just live on one machine.

degrawj 03-20-2005 09:34 AM

i never had firefox crash, but it was just too buggy. every now and then, it would just say "i don't feel like displaying pictures on this webpage," and there would be no pictures. then other times it would say "i think i'm going to change the font of all the text on the page to times new roman, and make it large." and there was no rhyme or reason to this stuff. it would do it on yahoo!, TFP, ESPN, hotmail, and other sites. i finally said fuck it, IE is so much more stable. i only wanted to use the tabbed browsing, but it's just not worth it.

superiorrain 03-20-2005 09:47 AM

Never had a problem with it. Touch wood i never will, to be fair i don't think i ever will. Since i saw the light (and thank to TFPers i did sooner rather than later) i have never looked back. I get the occasional screen freeze but it works itself out without to much interference from me.

Surely better than IE at the moment.

snowy 03-20-2005 11:51 AM

I've been using Firefox since before it was Firefox...so quite a while. I've never had any issues with it. No crashes, nothing buggy, no problems. It keeps my system a lot cleaner than IE (no spyware creeping in, no pop-ups, etc). I love it. I love my plug-ins--I have a plug-in for my LiveJournal that's awesome.

You couldn't get me to change back. No way.

lindseylatch 03-20-2005 01:38 PM

I almost orgasmed after switching to Firefox from IE...I HATE IE.

I think your problem is right there.

Did you uninstall the old Firefox before installing the new one?

That is one of the downsides to Firefox and its updates--you cannot install a new version on top of an old.

Back up your profile and your bookmarks. Then, completely blow Firefox away. After that, download and install the latest version.

You will most likely by O.K.

And, while you are at it.....get the MOOX build--it will make Firefox even better.

t3m3st 03-20-2005 06:01 PM

I've had it crash twice. Ironically enough, both times I was working on a Mac. On the PC, Firefox is brilliant.
