Motion detecting camcorder?

I'm familiar with motion-detecting DVR's for surveilance duty. What I need in this case is a stand-alone camcorder that will record when it detects motion. Has anyone seen such a thing?

I would imagine that you could easily make one if you were to mess around with the camcoder.

Vinaur, I need the camcorder to capture when it detects motion beyond a configurable threshhold and pause the rest of the time. If you can mess around with an existing model and make it work then I have a job for you. :)

I was thinking of using the motion detectors that they use for security systems (don't know if they could pick up small movement) and connecting the detectors to record/pause button on the camcorder.

Good thinking. I haven't been there in quite a while.

Nothing obvious, but it is good to know they've picked up the Human Element Range Extender for internet use. :D

After a bunch of quick searches I'm leaning toward the 40hr 2.5" disk dvr's. They don't have motion detection and I'd have to strap on a small camera, but 40hrs isn't bad. Motion analysis could be handled after transfer. Unless something better appears...

That would be a possibility - even if it's just a heat motion sensor. In this case though I need good control of the grid. My field of view is narrow and the background has motion I'll need to mask.

 so, ummmmm who are you stalking?

Just a few luscious tfp'ers...

So what part of Toronto are you from? ;)

Seriously, it's an odd workplace theft issue.

vinaur 03-17-2005 07:50 PM

It should be a fun project. I would love to do it myself, but I don't have a spare camcorder lying around.

If you do end up finding something that meets your specifications I would strongly suggest discussing it with your boss before setting up a Surviellance device in your workplace.

You could also set up a cheap webcam on your workspace PC and use one of many freely available motion-detecting webcam utilities out there... just my 2 cents.

for the thousandth time....your sister-in-law does NOT appreciate it when you record her shaving her legs in the morning....

jvwgtr 05-17-2005 11:02 AM

This used to be a standard feature on many JVC and Panasonic VHS-C camcorders...they quickly start up and record (without the recording light) within a few seconds of detecting motion.
It looks like you can buy a Panasonic PV-L354 on amazon for around $200.

the_marq 05-17-2005 11:16 AM

I'm not the first to recommend it; but why not just buy a cheap webcam and use some of the motion detecting software that is available?

Just google for 'motion detecting webcam."
