Is this monitor as dead as I think it is?
http://groups.msn.com/bossnasstfppic...msnw?Page=Last
Two of those pictures are of my old monitor. One with a flash, one with a 'non-flash flash'. A couple days ago I turned it on to a discover a very bright white line where I should see a picture. When unplugged from the tower, I get a smaller, moving white line (the floating test pattern, I think). Reset button/any other button no longer seem to work. It is about 5 years old, and it is an emachines costco special of my fiancees. So, is this monitor dead? How does one go about getting rid of a dead monitor? I suspect that the condo board and the city would prefer if I didn't toss it in the dumpster. |

Vertical refresh circuit.
Connect it again and try tilting, shaking, and slightly compressing the case from various angles. If the picture jumps to normal height, even intermittently, you likely have a cold solder joint at one of the components. Those can be easily fixed by someone comfortable with monitor work (quite dangerous if you don't know what you're doing). Sometimes a monitor like this will work for a while after you give it the caveman "whack", which is an approved fix for dying low-value electronics. If the horizontal line never changes then a component probably failed. Rooftop toss candidate. |
