Overcoming erroneous "license"

A friend of my son sent him a song he recorded. It's in wma format, and plays on my son's laptop.

However, it won't play on a portable mp3 player, and it won't play on my computer. I get the message about needing a license, which I know this kid didn't (intentionally at least) set out to do.

I was unable to convert it to another format on my son's laptop, at least with Winamp or Windows Media Player.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Use a program such as CoolEdit, AudioGrabber, Xilisoft, ACE-HIGH....etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried one or two, no luck.

So I asked a teenager. He told me to burn the wma to a CD, then rip it back. I did, and it worked.

I then discovered that the reason I got this assignment was so my son could get it as a ringtone on his phone.

I got some useful knowledge from you, and from the work I did, so I'm happy.

Thanks.

The only problem with that is you can lose audio quality. I had a link somewhere for de-protecting songs, but I didn't need it. I'll check back if I find it.
