Abit Nightmares

Sigh.

Here's the situation: My Abit AT7 is USB-retarded. The USB keyboard works UNTIL I get to windows, as does the mouse. It doesn't matter if I set the BIOS to BIOS or OS USB kybd/mouse support. The light in the mouse just goes out as soon as Windows initializes.

I can't log on to my computer, so I can't get the latest drivers, blah blah blah.

The Abit AT7 does not have PS/2 ports, so that's out of the question.

Abit doesn't even have a freaking forum for me to go look into.

Does anyone have any ideas? The damn thing has 6 USB ports, and none of them work.

HELP!?!

I have the same board....when i first got my board i tried swapping in a hard drive with win2k already pre installed. I did that to save the hassle of a reinstall. It wouln't work...so i had to do a clean install of win2k....thats the only os I have played with on that board...what os are you trying to use?

I haven't had that problem so I can't help you there. But I can give you this ABIT Forum.

edit: If I was having that problem I would set the OS to control the USB and try going into windows in safe mode (are you using xp?) by hitttin F8 before it loads. I don't know what that would do, though, that's what I would try :).

A little more background...

I am using XP Pro. The same install of XP Pro, on the same motherboard, that I've been using for 6 months, with mixed results. This is not the first time I've had USB issues. Actually, I had a Belkin hub that died, and I had been blaming it for my woes, but I just replaced that, and it's the same old bullshit.

"What changed with your setup?", I hear you ask.

I installed a new HEATSINK. For the northbridge.

Boy, I shoulda known better than to ask for trouble like that.

:)

Anyway, as it stands, I'm boned. Thanks for the link, smooth...hopefully someone there knows what to do.

BTW, safe mode doesn't help.

It did, however, show me that the lights go out EXACTLY when the USB driver loads.

Sigh.

Also, flashing the BIOS doesn't help.

Damn.

Try this, boot into safe mode. Enter the device manager and delete your USB ports. Reboot the system and install the Microsoft USB drivers.

I have a different ABIT board and had to do this With Win98. I have used other boards where I have installed the drivers that were on the CD. After that the USB ports didn't work either.

you might check the Abit forum on amdforums.com They have an Abit rep that checks the forums for help.

mpedrummer2 05-27-2003 07:52 AM

Thanks, hrdwareguy, but safemode doesn't work either.

I've been trying the abit forum, but it went down yesterday.

Addendum:

The lights go out (literally) on the mouse when mup.sys loads. I found this by watching safe mode as it loads up.

You might need to grab another xp pro computer and try using remote desktop to mess with the drivers since you can't use a regular mouse or keyboard.

mpedrummer2 05-27-2003 02:27 PM

Shot myself in the foot there...I disabled remote desktop a while ago...the whole thing made me nervous. I kinda saw it as a potential security issue.

I have a buddy who's lending me a spare HDD so I can do a fresh install of XP...I didn't want to erase mine just in case it's not Windows fault...though I'm not sure how I could have changed a driver setting by swapping my heatsink...lol.

What drivers are you loading for the mouse? Have you tried deleting the mouse drivers if they are from the manufacturer, or re-loading them if they are imbedded.

mpedrummer2 05-28-2003 07:25 AM

mtsgsd...

I cannot log into windows.

Therefore, I cannot change my mouse drivers.

Safe mode doesn't work either.

Booting without the mouse doesn't work.

Motry Latchman 05-28-2003 06:24 PM

Is it too late to RMA the board and get one with PS/2 ports? It sounds like you have the misfortune to be on the bleeding edge of technology.
