Issue with Vonage

This is my post from the Electronics forum which is located here if anyone want's to catch up:

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=82477

This issue would be better addressed in this forum so I'm just going to copy my last post from this and I'd like to have everyone in here take a look at the situation I'm having. Thanks.

I did. Originally what I wanted to do was set it up so I had a 907 number so it means no long distance for them. But Vonage doesn't offer the 907 code yet. But they say they're expanding, so hopefully they'll add it soon. One issue I'm having, and this might be better addressed in the Computers forum, is that I currently have the phone router (which is a Linksys by the way) set up in front of my wireless router. (Which is a US robotics) Here's a map I pulled from Vonage's site:

The phone router is basically just the phone jack and it's pulling an IP from my "gateway" router via DHCP. Of course, this essentially created two networks. According to Linksys's support site, I can't use and services that require port forwarding like Azuraus. I'm still playing with it because, frankly, I don't believe their assessment. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try and put the phone adapter behind my router and see what happens.

Now, here’s another question. Is anybody using this setup also using bit-torrent clients requiring port forwarding? If so, How'd you do it?

i have the vonage linksys router inside the router i had previously (which also happens to be linksys). so here's my setup:

Code:

cable modem
  > router
    > port 1 = my computer
      port 2 = my brother-in-law's computer
port 3 = family room computer
port 4 = vonage linksys router
      > port 1 = xbox (sometimes i plug my work laptop in here instead)
phone 1 = telphone jack (after disconnecting line from telco)

by doing it this way, i didn't have to change any of my port forwarding settings on my router and BTs work and all that. i don't believe i even had to set anything on my router to allow traffic to get to the vonage router.

so far, it's worked OK for me. i dunno if this setup is not as secure as what they're recommending, but this just seemed like the best way to keep it simple.

Thanks for the road map. For some reason earlier tonight, my wireless router just completely dropped its DHCP service. I was playing a game and when I was done, I tried to surf but my PC couldn't get an address from the router. I tried everything I could but I couldn't get it to renew the IP's. I ended up having to reset everything just to get net access and reconfigure everything again. If I don't get called to work tomorrow I think I'll try your suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions grendel. I played with it and actually got it to work. It took less time to put the phone adapter behind my router that it did to fix all the problems I had last night! Works fine now. Thanks.

glad to hear it!
