Ipod corrupt?

I have a 10GB ipod. I filled it up a while ago and now I want to put some new music on. The problems is, everytime I plug the ipod into the connector (connected to the firewire card) it resets my computer. In the case where it doesnt it doesnt recognize it or my computer freezes. Then when I restart my computer with the Ipod still plugged in the computer will freeze at the Win XP splash screen and so will the ipod. It did the first time I plugged it in but iTunes wasn't recognizing it and the hardware profile said the device could not start (code 10), so I unstalled it thinking that it would automatically reinstall itself, but it didnt. Now I don't know what to do. I installed the software, but that didnt do anything. I also put in a new mobo and cpu recently (2 weeks). Would that have anything to do with it? I'm clueless on what to do. Any sugguestions would help. Thanks in advance.

Do you have anything else that is Firewire-based? It sounds to me more of a problem with the Firewire card (software or hardware, who knows) than with the iPod.

If no one can help you here, check out the forums at ipodlounge.com.

Here's a couple of possibilities:

iPodlounge Forums - iPod crashes my computer.....oh dear
iPodlounge Forums - Windows XP crashes

Do you mean Apple's iPod Updater? Have you reformatted the iPod before, using either the official iPod Updater or with Windows? Have you used any disk utility software on the iPod?

There's lots of possibilities out there, just trying to narrow things down a bit.

I'd uninstall iTunes, then take your iPod and hold down Play(Pause)+Menu at the same time and it'll reset your iPod. If that doesn't work, you may want to take it up with Apples.

Definetley reset with Play-Menu, but for best results format it back to ground zero with the latest iPod update.

If you are still having the issue:

To go a step farther... follow the previous instructions about reseting the iPod (Hold Play/Menu) and then as soon as the iPod restarts, hold down left(track down) and menu until a service menu appears. (I don't remeber if it works on that generation of iPod.) Choose HD Chk... or something similar. This may give you a clue.
