Internet Explorer shutting down
Hope I can get this typed before IE shuts down...
When on the net lately IE has automatically shut down or come up with a not saying Application Error and saying there wasnt enough memory to read the page. what gives? |
Ill go ahead and summarize for you most of the responses you'll get:
Firefox. Could be something running in the background eating up all your RAM. |
Seriously, Firefox.

He didn't ask for a new browser.
I like firefox, and am using it typing this, but he want's to know how he can fix IE. Now.... Do you have AdAware and SpyBot and have you run them? If not, refer to the sticky at the top of Computers regarding internet problems. If you have run these and found nothing, pull up the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DLT) and look for anything weird. See something out of place or that you can't identify? Kill it and see what happens. At worst you have to restart the computer. Still nothing? Download Internet Explorer 6 SP1 from microsoft. Make sure to choose the full download package when offered the choice. This will be about 15mb. Once you are sure you have aquired the full install package, go to the add-remove funtion in the control panel. Choose IE and select remove. It will ask you if you would like to repair the program first. Choose yes and see if internet explorer works upon restart. If it does not, repeat the above proccess and remove IE from your system. This will require a restart, and most likley will also need your windows CD. If you "borrowed" a family members copy or got it off P2P, the game ends right here and you need to ask yourself why your ripping a company off by stealing. If you have the CD, were good to go. Pop it in on restart and XP or 2000 will try and reinstall IE 6. If this works and IE stays open, run Windows Update and pull down IE 6 SP1 via the update. This will require a restart. If for some reason Windows does not ask your for your CD, or cannot reinstall off the CD, then run the downloaded installation program. This should work as a last resort as it wipes out previous registry entries that may be causing problems. That should cover you good sir. If all else fails, take two asprin, go to sleep, and when calm in the morning, prepare to backup the machine and wipe the deck |
you can also download a program called CWShredder that can fix some crap in IE. Also, you could try HijackThis, but you may want to post the results of that before proceeding since you don't want to delete something you need.
I would assume you could just post the results here since people are very knowledgeable here. Also, thanks arch13, for actually offering advice on his problem. :) |
thanks for your responses. I am at work right now but will see what happens when i get home. ill let you all know. thanks again

I tried the stuff suggested and came to the conclusion that i would try firefox. I think I made the rigt choice as my internet is far quicker then internet explorer ever was. That being said, I read on here about a fellow having a viral manfestation and I think I might to have the same problem. Booked my computer in for a check up on Tuesday so hopefully things are ok.
Thanks to every one for their help and suggestions |
