Solaris 10
Has anybody used Solaris 10? Sun has released it as free (I guess because they think commercial linux is dying...) and my bandwidth is free right now. Is it worth the download?
I'd appreciate it if anyone can point me towards a torrent, as an http download of (average) 450 megs isn't too appealing. Especially four times. Linky for anyone who wants to check it out. |
They have a DVD image you should be able to download. Solaris is a different beast though. It is however a very mature, stable operating system. I have used Solaris 8 and 9 and liked both.
Though, I used them on SunFire R15000 machines, which were about $2 million a piece used for database and storage. I have not used them on the x86 platform before, though I can't imagine it would vary too much. Download it if you get a chance and play with it, it's good stuff. edit: I just looked at the DVD and you have to download it in multiple parts as well. |
On the X86 platform, this should be quite stable - I tried X86 solaris 8 and 9 and neither installed very well on the hardware I had lying around - I will probably give this a try - what else does one use cable for if not to download stuff like this?

Solaris 10 on x86 is an alltogether different beast than Solaris 8 or 9 on x86. They've finally decided to support the x86 platform, especially the Opterons.
You might find a torrent, but chances are, in a few days/weeks, the sun dl will be quicker. Their servers take a little while to get started but when they do, I usually break 200kb/s from them. |
I use 8 and 9 all the time at work. We're currently trying to download (which is going VERY slowly) 10 isos now to have a play..
