Wireless home audio

The room I have my TV / stereo / etc in isn't really set up for me to run wires all over the place to hook up my surround sound. I rent, so going through the walls isn't an option either. I've seen the wireless speaker sets online, at Best Buy, etc.. my question is this: is there any sort of accessory that I could buy to use my existing rear speakers wirelessly? Seems like I remember seeing some sort of wireless transmitter that plugs into the speaker jacks on the back of a receiver.. and a matching wireless receiver that somehow affixes to the speakers.

Am I making this up? Did I see it in a movie that took place in the future? I haven't found any definitive information online about this stuff.. Anyone have any sugestions for me?

Hmm yes they make what they call wireless recievers, you plug it in (for power) and plug your speakers in but your main reciever sends the audio to the wireless reicever. Frys electronics only sells these now because they had so many returns on the wireless speakers they carried.

I have a Radio Shack "Wireless Audio Link" that I use for the rear speakers in my surround setup. A little transmitter takes speaker wire input off my tuner, transmits to a receiver with an amp in it, which sits behind the couch, and routes sound to the rear speakers on tables on either side of the couch.

I can't find it on their website anymore, but if you go into the store and ask, you might get lucky. I did find this on their website:

Only thing is, that doesn't do speaker wire input and output, only RCA. But it also transmits video, which I believe I could probably find some uses for!

Avoid wireless speakers at all cost. Their sound is absolutely horrendous. Look into some ribbon flat speaker cables.

Route the speakers under the carpet, dont use wireless speakers.

Awesome, what did you end up doing?

By the way im in austin too, what apartments do you live at?

Wound up buying some flat speaker wire and just running it along the baseboards / over doorways, back down, etc. Kind of a pain but ultimately probably the best solution.

I live in a garage apartment behind a house in Travis Heights.. near Riverside / S. Congress area.
