High Bandwidth VNC
 

So, here is the situation.

I have a server running win2k on an older computer in the other room. I currently have tight vnc running on it, and on my pc. It works, but it looks and responds quite poorly. They are connected thru a 100 mbit connection, and currently using tightvnc they use only a few k/sec. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with somme other vnc programs, or other applications which were created more for the local area network user, which can take advantage of the high speed connection.

We use RealVNC at my company for VNC applications. I don't know if it'll be any different.

Is it connected to the internet? If not ... why not use Microsoft's Remote Desktop? You can get the admin version of it off of the W2K CD so that you can log in to the console.

Even if it is connected to the internet you probably don't have much to worry about with the right firewall.

I've never used TightVNC, but RealVNC has worked great when I've used it, even over the internet (usually). And why not Microsoft Remote Desktop? Because VNC works with Unix, MacOS, and Windows (or really any platform you can imagine since the protocol is simple and documented), AND most if not all implementations are free as in freedom.

UltraVNC works well. The fastest is Microsoft's own Remote Desktop and comes with Windows Server, XP, or a free download for 2000.

apparently there is only a client side version for w2k (ie: you can connect and control other computers, but not connect and control it.)

Am I looking in the wrong places? Has anyone found a server side remote desktop for w2k pro?

Because, if he has no reason to use Unix or Macs, why not use what is fast and the best for Windows in general? VNC is a great product, but despite it's best efforts, Windows Remote Destktop is still 100x faster.

I don't remember him mentioning any Macs or Unix boxes in the mix.

If you are using tightVNC, upgrade to the latest beta, and they also have a mirror video driver that you should download and install.

The latest versions of tightVNC will automatically adjust to your bandwidth (like, when on a LAN, they will use less compression and just try and get the data to you faster, or on a slow connection, it will bump up the compression so that less data is sent)

But the most important thing is using the beta version of tightvnc along with the tightvnc video driver. That video driver speeds up tightvnc tenfold, almost up to the remote desktop made by microsoft. The video driver also makes tightvnc use much less processor time.
