eXeem duscussion

So, bittorrents' new child has arrived. the new exeem p2p system is out for public beta. I'm giving it a try now, seems to work ok, although naturally there are few members on the networks right now, so available files are pretty low...
anyone else giving it a go?
post your thoughts here!

EDIT: Hmmm....just did a search to make sure this topic hadn't come up before. Seems that Suprnova closed its doors exactly one month ago today....nice timing!

Hanabal 01-22-2005 12:40 AM

well i would try it apart from the fact it comes with adware.

kolila 01-22-2005 01:10 AM

theres a lite version without adware

sadistikdreams 01-22-2005 01:16 AM

EEEEH! Kinda tough ground. We don't like warez really advertised here. So long as you all don't post links and shit, that's fine. Just talk about like performane or whatev.

Hanabal 01-22-2005 03:01 AM

come on now, everyone knows that these things are used exclusively to distribute GNU apps and the like.

Date the Banana 01-22-2005 11:18 AM

dunno what you're talking about...I'm using it exclusively to get the new knoppix download....
then again, exeem is windows only, so if I get linux this becomes a moot discussion...
oh the conundrums....

Hanabal 01-22-2005 12:07 PM

i think i read somewhere that there is a linux version somewhere.

SecretMethod70 01-22-2005 12:39 PM

It says in the FAQ on their site that they're working on a Linux version.

eXeem in Linux:
This is unofficial quick guide about how to run the exeem file sharing program on Linux operating system, since its only for windows currently.

First of all you need a program named wine on your Linux distro, if you dont know what it is then read here.

Im not the expert for wine program, so dont blame me and im not responsible for any actions you do with help of this guide!

Now that you have wine installed and configured, here are the easy steps how to do it:

1. Exeem installation with wine:

Option 1 - Copy your existing exeem directory from your winbox to your wine 'Program Files' directory in your virtual c:/ drive, or where-ever.
Dlls also available:

Option 2 - Download exeem installation file and execute it 'wine exeem-setup.exe' and install it.

2. Exeem under wine configuration:

Open your wine config file (~/.wine/config usually) and put this at the end:

[AppDefaults\\eXeem.exe\\DllOverrides]
"*" = "builtin, native"
"dciman32" = "native"
"dciman" = "native"
"shdocvw" = "native"
"msvcp71" = "native"
"msvcr71" = "native"
"gdiplus" = "native"

If you dont have those dll files (dciman*.dll or shdocvw.dll) then you will need to get them from google.

Other dlls are included in exeem (0.18+) directory.

3. Go to exeem directory and type 'wine eXeem.exe' and thats it! It will ask you for serial most probably since your exeem registry data is clear. If your're using the new public beta, then there is no serial key.

Final notices:

- If it hangs up then minimize the window and maximize it back, then it will be back to normal (lol).

- If you change your configuration, including adding the serial, the changes will be saved when you exit the exeem successfully..
- You might get an annoying runtime error on exit.

- Ive tested it with eXeems 0.16,0.17,0.18 betas.

- If you use the beta version <0.20, then you can close the serial request window.

- All the options are working fine.

Thats all for now!

Date the Banana 01-22-2005 09:50 PM

cool!
I'll have to give that a try when I finally take the plunge!
/looks off the cliff, hmm....scary, but exhilarating...

k0ruptr 01-22-2005 10:16 PM

the version out now has no spyware.

Anomaly_ 01-22-2005 10:28 PM

It has crashed on me several times, but being a beta, this is not surprising. What is disappointing is that it's not open-source. Unless it really catches on, I see no reason to use it over the various 'specialized' trackers i.e. Empornium, Delirium Vault, Hulong MMA, etc. eXeem will most likely be the bastion for MPAA movies, though.

omega2K4 01-22-2005 10:41 PM

I was in the closed beta, and it was great. I will not use the public beta because of the spyware/adware (Cydoor). I don't know how long you'll be able to use the "lite" version now, they can supposedly block access to anything that isn't the original, official program.

Boo Radley 01-22-2005 10:47 PM

I'm curious how the lite version is being made.. If they take the approach of Kazaa lite(Reverse Eng.) they are just asking for that court case's precedent to be applied on them.

Frankly i'm not installing anything that contians Cydoor.

noodles 01-23-2005 09:25 AM

i was expecting much more.
color me disappointed.

bendsley 01-23-2005 12:28 PM

There is a really nice (long) thread going on at Slashdot should you wish to know more.

sinjien 01-26-2005 11:44 PM

it sucks...plain and simple; and this coming from the makers of suprnova?...lets see how it does after the fix the instability issues and have more files.

Date the Banana 01-27-2005 06:22 AM

yeah, I just uninstalled it. After the glorious buffet of neat stuff (I never downloaded anything that wasn't on TV, my parents could have taped it and sent it to me so I really don't think I was doing anything wrong) that was suprnova I can't believe how limited the selection was. It was slow, unstable (beta, true) and I can't believe that there was spyware on it. Boooo!!!!

I'd avoid if I were you.

Blaspheme 01-27-2005 10:09 AM

Limited selection is going to be a problem with any new network. You can't pass judgement on something that is founded on user participation before its even been available for a full month.

As for the Cydoor issue, I downloaded the 0.20 release from the official site and it didn't install Cydoor and I see no advertisements. I'm not sure why this is the case, but I see from other threads elsewhere that I'm not the only one who has a mysteriously add-free eXeem. Perhaps Spybot immunization combined with using Firefox throws a monkey wrench in their works?

In truth, as long as Cydoor does nothing but provide advertisements that are only seen within the eXeem window while eXeem was running I really wouldn't have any problem with it. Advertising supported programs aren't inherently wrong, after all I don't refuse to listen to the radio because the stations are supported by advertisers. My concern is the invasion of privacy if the program was also monitoring what I do at my PC, where I web browse etc. I don't honestly know if Cydoor does this, or how to find out for certain if it did.

jonjon42 01-27-2005 02:39 PM

I just wish they would open the protocol up for all to view...plus the fact that this program is so much more blatent about being for the spreading of pirated material makes me nervous..bittorrent has been great partly because it makes getting the latest knoppix cd or gentoo 2004.3 soo much easier...

but in other news
http://kenosis.sourceforge.net/
is an very interesting open project (done in python) that seems to provide the same type of tracker is client system that exeem does...(I think)

Try removing Cydoor after getting it.

I got it a few years back and it was a bitch to remove.

KMA-628 01-29-2005 12:19 AM

As for exeem lite, I have gotten nothing but this for several days now:

08:18 scheduling a node request at: 08:18
08:18 sending node request to network
08:18 node request failed, retrying in 5 minutes

failed node request, over and over and over.

It worked for a day and a half and then nothing.

Methinks it has to do with the little war between exeem and exeem lite.

Actually, I have in the past. Once removed (with SpyBot) it disappeared completely. It would reinstall if I ran the program that came bundled with it, but other than that it didn't display any hostile behavior.

zero2 01-29-2005 11:05 AM

I don't think you can fully remove cydoor, since everytime you run exeem cydoor seems to try to connecting to your computer.

punx1325 01-29-2005 11:12 AM

Why in God's name would they package adware into a program. They know we want nothing to do with adware. I would happily pay 10 bucks for this program, at a later date, if I knew it was adware free. Oh well the sites work well for now...

They package adware because it gives them the money they need to keep the program alive and put food on their table. Maybe you personally would donate for a program without advertisements, but it's been proven over and over that the vast majority of people will not. None of these software companies can stay alive with only 1 in 100 or fewer users paying.

I'm not saying that I support intrusive adware, far from it. I don't mind in the slightest though, getting a quality program for free just for letting them display a small banner add in the program. The issue for me isn't the adds, it's what else the advertising program may be trying to do.
