Remote access to music
I hope I am not asking an already answered question (a search didn't find any already posted topic), but I was wondering if there was a way to access my mp3 collection at home from a computer at work. I am hoping for an open source (read: free) program that would allow this. I could probably set up a shoutcast station or something, but I want to be able to control which mp3 I want to hear at any time. Any ideas?

Set up Slim Server (<a href="http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_features.html">which you can find HERE</a>). It's an mp3 internet radio server that sits on your computer and is fed playlist info over a web interface.
You may need to poke some holes if you're behind a firewall or NAT router, of course. |
if you have webserver software on your compuer, you can just place the music under the webroot and then you can just play the url from winamp.

possibly set up a ftpd at home?
then just stream the songs from media player of choice.... |
i havent found the media player that would stream from over ftp. most will work fine over http though.
I would suggest some sort of password authentication on your webserver if you take that route to protect yourself from RIAA. |
<a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/gnump3d/">GNUMP3d</a> is your friend. It's an all-in-one package, so you don't need to have a webserver or anything already running to use it. It also has support for skins, keeps nifty statistics about your music collection, allows you to do searches, setup playlists, then stream your music via shoutcast/icecast. You can even configure it to re-encode (using LAME, for example) the outgoing stream so you dont eat up too much bandwidth.
Overall, a fscking great program. Oh yeah, it works on Windows too, but you have to install Perl for Windows and jump through a couple <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/gnump3d/README.Windows">hoops</a>. |
For a long time I just had a simple asp script that looped thru my main mp3 directory and created a playlist for Winamp. Simple and it worked. It got replaced with a external HD that I take back and fourth to work :)
