Quicktime + iTunes ... are you kidding me??

If you need to go download Quicktime from Apple's site, you are forced to download it bundled with iTunes if you want QT for WinXP. What a bunch of crap!

Or, you can get this. It's called Quicktime Alternative. QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages.

There is also a program called Real Alternative. Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player.

Use it, give iTunes a try. You'll be glad you did.

Both quicktime and real alternative get the thumbs up from me. I've been using them for a while now and they are just great

I use a program named "Media Player Classic" that plays real media files. I hate real player.

I've given iTunes a try on Windows, and I'm not glad I did. It took over things without asking me (and I'm very anal about looking out for that stuff on installation - it's one of the reasons I don't complain about RealPlayer since I catch everything while it installs). Not to mention I have no reason to use the iTunes music store when I can just get songs for free elsewhere.

Apple is trying to pull the same crap that Real did for awhile, making it difficult to get the free standalone version of their softaware. When I go to Real's site, I want to be able to see clearly where to go to get the free version of RealPlayer, and when I go to Apple's site, I shouldn't be forced to download and install two programs in order to get one.

Yeah, yet another reason I hate iTunes. It lasted only a matter of and hour before I uninstalled it and Quicktime. If you must have Quicktime or Real get Alternative for both. Hell, I won't even install that. Either way you look at they both suck. If it's in Real or Quicktime format I just don't need to see it.

Bleh. Once you get past the minor installation "issues," its all smooth sailing. And you don't have to deal with the antiquated MP3 format anymore.

Right, you get to deal with Apple DRM instead.

The MP4/AAC format is not DRMed, and is not owned by Apple. Music purchased from the iTunes Music Store is in AAC format, with a Fairplay wrapper that adds the DRM. You can rip your own CDs into AAC format and there is no DRM associated with them.

I know, and I don't think I implied that AAC had DRM built in, but it seemed to me that he was talking about iTunes, which as you say, means DRM.

No, I think he was saying that there's inherent problems with the MP3 compression methodology, and that just about any other codec will give you better results in both size and sound quality.

Well, questions regarding the quality of mp3 aside, this thread *is* about iTunes and Quicktime, so I think it's fair to say that the DRM nullifies any comment that using iTunes to not deal with mp3 any longer is a good thing. No matter what the merits of AAC may be when used alone, songs from iTunes music store have DRM. I'll stick with "good enough" mp3 instead - not to mention that I can play mp3s, and even oggs, in far more and more convenient places than I can play AAC.

Could you edit that to read "songs from the iTunes Music Store have DRM"? Because CDs ripped to AAC using iTunes do not have DRM.

I was pointing out the superior AAC compressor to MP3. And yes, songs off the iTMS have DRM. So do songs you purchase from any other source.
