agh, weird problem!
alright, here's the scoop.
my computer messed up, so after a lot of fiddling i got it to (sort of) work again, i installed a new win xp to a different directory. and that pretty much got her going. so im all pumped, havent used my computer in a while. and it doesnt work too well. ALOT of drivers are missing, some i don't have the disks for so it'll take a while to track down and try to reinstall them. mostly my sound card and video card. programs don't work. i try to run some games and such, and they give me things like "missing .dlls" and some just won't plain run. (did a full install of Baldur's Gate 2, played for a while, now when i try to run it here, i guess it doesnt detect it's been installed, so it brings up the screen with the install option) and my computer runs choppily. it never did before. but when i'm scrolling in Explorer or anywhere else, it scrolls really choppily. anyway, my old (probably messed up) windows file is WINDOWS, which i renamed OLDWIN, the new directory i isntalled xp to is WINDOWB (which i think might be causing some problems) i can't quite figure out how to rename it to WINDOWS... ?anyone? and also, is there an easier way (forget system restore, i disabled that a while before the crash) to get my old settings back? i figure alot of drivers and stuff are stuck somewhere in the OLDWIN folder. the only real information and files that were lost when i reinstalled windows to windowsB was anything on my desktop and stuff in my documents etc. so, any help? |

well, this is what im thinking...
gonna pick up a second hard drive tomorrow (the guy said i could get a 40gb for about $70) throw all my important files over there (mp3s, save game files, torrents etc) and then format the current C:... and then install xp again (i might put everything back on the c if im not lazy) and hopefully that will not only fix the problem, but also clear up some of the clutter/lagginess of my computer. |

well, no one knows because you haven't told us what soundcard you have
the games need to be reinstalled - your old windows knew about them but your new windows does not. The easiest way to correct that is to delete the old install and reinstall the games. Tell me what soundcard you have and I'll tell you where to get drivers. |

Can you do a system restore? I had to do this the other day when I accidently installed some fucked up software- it solved my problems by taking me back to the settings on a given day.

I "think" you could use the Aureal drivers from here:
http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/com...hx=9&bng=7&o=5 This is just from a bit of googling - perhaps someone else would like to confirm (or you can suck it and see).

rune, you got a mess.
find some way to save your important files (second hard drive is not a bad idea). usb memory stick might work too, or your burner if its working. put windows xp disc in cd rom, reboot from cd rom device. choose the format drive option and giv'r. gl.

after you finish the windows install. you may need all sorts of drivers (ie.vid card, sound card, printer, NIC).
if you have any cd's that came with your box, should be on there. if not, try www.driverguide.com user: driver2 pwd: all manufacturer websites are good for drivers to.
