hi all, i was wondering how i may identify what a device is just by looking up the fcc id. I tried googling but i dont get the results im looking for.

i just found that and was going to post it. its a good find. but now i have found the listing but i still dont know what this is. time for the whole story.

all of my friends know im a tinkerer and so they occasionally drop miscellany electronics on me. in this case i recieved a blacksteel case with rounded edges. there are only 3 ports on the box. they are what appears to be a cat5 port, a scsi or printer styled port, and an antenna port. i know by the stickers that it was manufactured by motorola inc. and has an fcc id: ABZ89FT5725. The model number is S3075A. there are a few random numbers on printed stickers as well. these are
SUN1670AD
82A39C41 133A-4-a5-23A8
gm414967

on googling these i get nothing. the fcc page just tells me what i already knew, except that it broadcasts in the range of 824-849mHz. any one know what i have on my hands?

Perhaps it's some sort of old school wireless access point? Does it have any place to plug power into it?

Some of the older networking stuff had an RJ-45 (cat-5) jack, an AUI connector, which looked like a slightly shorter DB-25 (printer) port, though I can't recall how many pins off the top of my head, and a BNC jack for coax.

If it were me, I'd bust out a screwdriver and see what the guts look like ;)

The frequencies have been used for analog and digital cell service. Almost sounds like a classic bag phone base. Ouch, the memories... Here's one on ebay:

What are the device dimensions? Can you post a picture? There are enough geeks around here... One of us has probably seen it before.

any ideas? i think it looks similar to cyrnel's image

Yep, I'm fairly certain that's one of their cell bases. Was there any evidence of mount straps or similar? It might be an automotive unit.

no mount straps that i could see. just that smooth-ish case. can i use it for anything? or is it just kind of a cool paperweight?
