Removing the region on a dvd..
The other day at work, a co-worker let me borrow his region 6 dvd of "House of Flying Daggers" and I figured that it would work perfectly since the region 6 dvd of ''Hero'' I played a few weeks earlier worked fine. Well I got it home and I can only hear sound, no video. I brought it back to him and he mentioned something about stripping the region when you burn a copy of the dvd, and it should work fine. Now, I'm no copier of dvd's, infact I've never done it once, but I really want to see this movie and it is only released in china and figured what the hey. Has anyone heard or have any experience in this?

google for DVD Shrink.
It removes region codes and handles backing up DVDs pretty much with a 1 button interface (you can reauthor if you want). Or there is Gordian Knot if you want to backup DVDs to your hard disk. Remember that copying DVDs you do not own is illegal in most countries... |
Check out www.videohelp.com and www.doom9.org. Either of those websites should answer any questions you have about anything to do with DVDs.
And, AngelicVampire is right about copying DVDs that you do not own. |
DVD Decrypter is free and very capable of ripping, too. Rip the whole disc to your HD (I prefer file mode) and use PowerDVD to watch it. You can back it up to DVDR if you have a burner. I use Nero if the total file size is under 4.3GB, if not, use CloneDVD or DVDFab to split up.

I second DVD Decrypter, awesome program.

DVD Shrink is the best I've used. It's easy and free. Also when I backup DVDs I already own with DVD Shrink I can take out all the french and spanish subtitles and stuff noone ever uses, that way it fits better on a single layer DVD.
