My internet randomly cuts out

Well, more like every five minutes, so I guess it isn't that random, but still.

Two computers on a Linksys BEFSR41 router. Both setup to use DHCP.

Both computers (or one computer and my xbox at times) can and will connect to the internet / XBL. The problem is, is that I stop sending/receiving information. This in turn gets me disconnected from games and XBL, freezes all of my downloads, and webpages won't load until I refresh them.

I have tried unplugging the modem and router both (and seperately) for 5-10 minutes at a time, then plugging them back in. I've tried resetting the router. I have switched the connections to different ports on the router. And plugged the connection directly into one computer, in case it was the router. The problem persists across both computers and my xbox. I have also updated my router's firmware, and updated my NIC drivers.

I've been pinging sites randomly at the command prompt. Connection is perfectly fine and fast, until it gets to one of those "not working" times, in which case every ping and tracert times out.

I'm at wit's end here. No Halo2 or World of Warcraft for the past three days is starting to kill me. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? The only thing I could think of is just investing in a new router (since I know Linksys ones are crap) but I don't really have the money for that after Christmas shopping.

I was going to say try to update the router's firmware but you said you tried that. Have you verified if the problem is in the router or your cable modem? I would say that is the next step. Ping the routers IP address (I believe the default in linksys is 192.168.1.1) and see if it stops when you are having a problem. If it doesnt, then log into the router while you are testing and try to ping the cable modem. This depends on the ISP, I think mine is 10.0.0.1.

If that all works fine, it could be a problem with the ISP, so you may want to try calling them.

Once you determine where the problem is, I would try a replacement first. It could just be bad hardware that you are pulling your hair out on!

ya know, i've been having similar problems with my Linksys BEFSX41 router as well.

I just recently got the latest firmware drivers and it seems to be ok for now. Are you using Comcast cable, by chance? And do the modem LEDs indicate anything about the connection being good/bad when things go haywire? I talked to a guy at comcast and he said everything looked ok at their end.... some help they are.

Check the DHCP settings of your router. Has the modem issued your router proper IP address information? Also, when you try to ping something when your connection is down, does the request time out, or does the domain name not even resolve? If it doesn't resovlve, maybe your DNS servers are being poopy.

I'm using Adelphia's cable modem service. I haven't checked the LEDs on the modem, but I don't think there are even any there to indicated when something isn't working.

Pinging the router when the service cuts results in 0% packet loss, with a response time of 0ms. Pinging the modem results in the same, only with a response time of around 60ms. I'm getting good speeds and everything, I just keep hitting walls.
