Two Questions, 5.1 Surround Problem and HD Temp
1) At what temp C should I worry about my hard-drives? I just built a new computer yesterday and I want to watch the temps of everything closely for a week or so to be sure my case circulation is good, etc.
2) I have onboard 7.1 Surround, but I use 5.1 Speakers... anyways, I have the audio software (latest version) set to 5.1, and it works fine in the problem test (it says "X Speaker" at each speaker, left back, right back, left front, etc) and it works in Windows Media Player 10 (music and movies). The problem is, the back speakers don't work in foobar2000 or Winamp... I know its a software problem, I just don't know how to resolve it... theres no way I'm using WM10 for music playing... Thanks in advance.

harddisk temperatures can be anything, ranging from room temperature, to 40 or 50 degrees C.
My WD raptor (10K rpm) usually hovers around 30C, but when it's running full speed for a while, it can go up to 45C. My other WD (120 gig) has no thermal sensor; a sensor from my coolermaster Aerogate puts the temperatures around 35 to 40C. The difference is mainly from the good cooling I have for my raptor, versus the lousy cooling for the other disk. Officially, WD harddisks are allowed to get up to 55C. However, I'd say that anything over 40 - 45C for longer periods should be avoided. |

Higher temperatures may not damage your harddisk right away, but it might pose problems in the long run. |
