serious noobie firefox questions
HI all
have been operating firefox for 2 month now due to Phredgreen recommendation and it is qwality. Like a child with a new toy want to put the stripes down the side acan any one clearly exp extension and themes. I have some installed but a sense of parionia that nothing seems to happen has set in ( nuke it, adblock etc) do I ahev to activate them etc. PLease help me thanks |
I'm thinking the dictionary/spelling extension would be good.
I don't think I understand what you're asking because I can't read a thing you're saying. |
You need to restart Firefox after installing an extension. Then, go to Tools -> Extensions and set the options, if necessary.
I recommend the extension SpellBound, which checks spelling ;). EDIT: Bendsley beat me to it. |
Y half the fun is typing as you think it with out looking, but if you feel the literary need we will see ( oh Sh8t there is not a punctuation extension )
Thanks Redlemon ( acknowledged as major firefox guru) will I recieve notifications or do they act independently in the back ground ? |

That being said, some will start automatically, some need to be "told" to start. If the extension didn't start automatically (i.e. WeatherFox, Adblock, GooglePreview, etc.), then go to Tools > Extensions. Usually you will be able to select the extension and then click on options to activate/set it up. Also, some extensions will be available by right-clicking. For example, if I right-click, I get access to: "Reload Every", "MapIt", "FoxyVoice" and "View this page in IE". Installing extensions and changing themes will require a restart of FireFox. |
thanks KMA-628
I have just upped to version 1.0 and nuke does not appear compatiable. I was try to ask for idiots guide to extensions and what they do and how they operate. I think i confused my self before asking the question. I am hoping like zonealarm, it prevents actions until you authorise them. |
adblock works with 1.0, uninstall it and then try again.
Also, for your reading pleasure, there are several threads discussing the different extensions, you could try searching to get more info. I'm not sure if I understand your last statement, but the "actions" are usually prevented by FireFix itself. You have to click on AdBlock and then disable specifics (a screen will pop up with everything on the particular site that can be disabled). AdBlock just adds to the already pretty secure environment of FireFox. |
Some people have trouble with getting the (straight) words out to their fingers unjumbled. So it would be a good idea to cease critiquing the typing without knowing the poster.
(Yes, that was a strong hint.) |
Thanks Lebell, i was about to post something similiar. To answer the original question, Extensions and Themes are small add-ons for firefox that add additional functionality. How they work all depends on the certain extension. For example the Nuke extension you mentioned ads an option to the right-click menu with the option to nuke various things such as images or selections. The adblock extension ads a small "adblock" tab above all flash content so you can easily click it to disable flash advertisements. The best way to see how certain extensions work is visit their homepage. If you get your extensions from (https://update.mozilla.org/extension...cation=firefox) each one has a link to the creators home page. Themes are similiar except they all work in the same way, once you install them you must restart firefox. Once restarted click the tools menu, then themes, and select the theme you'd like from the list. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask, and dont worry about the spelling/punctuation, I understood it just fine.

Let me add a bit more. There are many sources to get extensions. The 'official' one is Mozilla Update (https://update.mozilla.org/). Any extensions on this site have been proofed for compatibility by official people. However, it takes a while for extensions to be listed there, and for updates to be listed.
Two alternates: Extensions - MozillaZine Forums (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=19) and The Extensions Mirror Forums (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?act=idx). The MozForum site has discussions regarding new extensions, often with the extension developers discussing the bugs with users. The Mirror site also has unofficial "patched" updates for extensions that the original authors haven't upgraded to work with the current version of Firefox. You mentioned NukeIt, by which I believe you meant Nuke Anything. You can get a patched version here: Nuke Anything 0.2 - The Extensions Mirror (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=77). I hope you were not offended by my SpellBound suggestion. I use it all the time. I had about 5 misspellings in this post alone. |
Yarg... I went and installed SpellBound after it was suggested in this thread, and it completly fkked things up.
**Firefox would not start 3 out of 5 tries, it would show up in processes but not in tasks and not on the screen. **After I uninstalled spellbound not only did the problem not go away, but now none of my other extentsions work properly. Most noteable is Adblocker, now I am seeing flashing, blinking gifs everywhere. I'm going to try to reinstall my extensions now and see what happens. This is the first problem I have ever had with firefox after 5-6 months of use...but I am still pissed. BTW, I'm on XP Pro and using this ver of firefox : Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 |
Whew, the_marq, I've never seen that happen. Did you do the install from his home page? Try here: SpellBound, and don't do the download, do the online install.
Oh, but of course, you now have a fucked profile. Do you need help creating a new one without losing too much data? |
Redlemon, yeah I installed from sourceforge...I dunno what the hell happened.
I am going to blow away my install of FF and start over again. I'm just backing up my favourites and stuff now (I am posting from IE at the moment :( ) C'est la vie. |
thanks all
aside from my leaning towards typos. You have all helped esp bal8664 and redlemon some good advice and links the_marq hope everything gets sorted ! Have had similar probs with other downloads. Themed to Noia2 ( extreme) fantastic . would not go back to IE and would actively recomend fire fox to everyone. Another reason why TFP rocks my socks , it free people are generally kind and always willing to have a go at helping anyone anywhere ( big thanks to all and HAlX) |
