Gigabyte mobo problem
I'm using a gigabyte ga-7nnxp with an amd athlon 3200+. i just moved everything to a new case, and it turns on fine ONLY if i run it at 100mhz cpu/200fsb. when i try to set it to 200/400 the machine just resets itself after saving the BIOS configuration and then wont get any signal on the monitor....the weird thing is that everything worked fine in the other case. im pretty sure nothing is shorted and it DOES work at the safe (100/200) fsb setting.
any suggestions? |
Check your power supply.
If the board is drawing more power at higher Mhz, the power draw may be to much for a samll power supply. Hence the board only works at a lower Mhz becuase the power supply can provide the power needed. |
Good observation arch. With a new case usually comes a new PSU. Is there a new PSU in the case aa1037? If so, what's the brand/wattage of the old PSU and what's the brand/wattage of the new one? Having a PSU that's not up to the task will definitely limit CPU performance.

ok so now i'm pretty sure that it isn't my PSU (damnit)...
I tried using another PSU and it did the same thing...I also only connected things I needed. Maybe more of my sysinfo can help you guys think of what to do? Gigabyte GA-7NNXP Athlon XP 3200+ 2x512 Corsair XMS 3200C2PT (DC DDR400) BFG Geforce 6800GT 2x Maxtor 120gb HDDs (RAID-0) i only connected the molex connectors to those items...still resets itself during various times in the boot process when using the 200/400 fsb setting |
Try going into a "manual" configuration mode and check that you've got the following settings:
FSB: 200Mhz Multiplier: 11x (start turning this down if you still can't POST) Mem FSB: 100%/200Mhz (this may be set to >100% by default for 166FSB procs) CPU vCore: <default> (tick this up a bit if you're still having trouble POSTing) Also, check your CPU temp. A poorly seated heatsink or absence of good thermal grease will cause the CPU to run too hot and thus not be able to POST at rated speed. |

ok so i figured it out and it's really dumb...
basically, i moved all the stuff over, right? which included the HSF which i removed from the CPU (thus basically unstickin the thermal tape/paste) i checked the temp and it was WAY high...so i went and got some thermal paste and slapped it on and voila, machine works again /le sigh, so simple haha thanks all who contributed |
