xbox and router

I also posted this in the tilted gaming but didn't get very many responses.

I am in the dorms at college, and we like to play Halo 2 on the internal network for the building. I am using a router for my computer, and want to run my xbox through it to get on the network. When I get on the network when I unplug my router and plug my xbox directly in to my ethernet port in the wall. But when I go through my router i can not see the other games in progress.

My comp is set to 192.168.1.100 and my xbox is on static ip to 192.168.1.101 I have port 3074 forewarded for both udp and tcp and port 88 for udp. does anyone have any suggestions so i can play xbox on the network and use my comp at the same time?

On the Microsoft website it said my router is compatable with XBOX live with the firmware version I am using.

First of all during a lan game all x-box's have the ip address 0.0.0.1. It's just how the system link works.

In answer to your problem the easyest solution would be to buy a small hub, hook it up to the router, the x-box, and the lan. Should work

i hook my Xbox up to my router whiches uses DHCP to assign IP's and it worked without changing any setting on the Xbox. But i have noticed a big change in speed if i hook the DSL modem strait to the Xbox. Not sure why. Even if i turn all comps off it still seems to lag if it goes threw the router. Maybe its a bad router.

In ur case u aint using a modem so i dont know if a router would be the thing to use. I have not ever been on a network such as urs. I would get a switch instread of a Router if i was you. Would work better.

I've been burning up the wire, searching for the solution to your problem (I noticed it in Tilted Gaming) and haven't found anybody with your particular problem.

I would say....

First, I would double check the firmware. I know, I know, you're not an idiot, but I've done some pretty stupid things and overlooked some pretty simple answers before. Sometimes it happens.

You mentioned it's a befsr41. I assume it's running the 1.04.8 or 1.05.00 version of the firmware.

Second, since the IP addy of the X-box is static, I would use the router to set it up in a DMZ. Your X-box is probably pretty safe being "exposed"

I found an ftp link to the manual in case you lost yours or don't want to fool around with it willy-nilly. Not your specific manual, but it covers several similar versions. You can find it here.

I've read about problems related to port forwarding. Turn it off. Microsoft says you don't need it.

You could try running the x-box through your computer using ICS. I don't know if that would affect lag much, but it's worth a shot. You would be using your PC as a big ol' router. If this worked and you could see everything, then it would mean the original router was the problem, right?

Does anybody else run their x-box through a router at your dormitory? If it's just you suffering through it that's one thing, but if everybody else has the same problem than that would exonerate the router, no?

I don't know if this will help, but what the hell, eh?

guthmund-

Fist of all thanks for the info. I am running frimware version 1.05.00. I'm not sure how to set up my router in a DMZ, so I'll look into it and give it a try.

With port forewarding I'll try having it on and off with each thing I try to make sure its not part of the solution/problem.

Again, not sure how to run it through my com with the ICS, but will look into it as well.

I'm not sure if anyone is using a router, but I will ask around. They may be able to provide some help.

Thanks again for the info.

I like to help or at least don't screw it up too bad for the next guy.

Your best bet is probably the DMZ solution. If I've got the right manual, it's on page 40 of 66 on the *.pdf I linked with my earlier response.

It would just let the X-box be out there on the network balls out.

Let us know how it works out, eh?

I am trying out the DMZ because there isn't really a risk of having it outhere without the firewall. I don't know if you saw my post in gaming, but I called Linksys and he had no idea what I was trying to do. I'm going to call them again after my thanksgiving break from school. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it turns out
