soft raid under linux (red hat 9)

ive been able to get ata harware raid configurations working on hpt controllers, but i've had it with promise. maybe i'll give 3ware a try, but in the meantime, i was thinking about giving soft raid a try (especially after reading somewhere that hardware ata raid was more like a bios assisted soft raid).

i want to set up mirrored drives (raid 1) so i know /boot and / should be fine, but i know you can't/shouldn't raid the /swap so i guess have the kernel distribute the swap between drives.

is anyone running softraid that can offer any advice/suggestions/links (the how-to is a little weak)? if this works well, i'll eventually pursue converting a system to softraid

Did you look at http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO.html?

i have...curious about what people using soft raid think about it. still a little leary of the "soft" stigma.

I can eat up CPU power if it needs to rebuild the array. I used RAID5 for a while, worked fine.
