One question but does anyone think the Ipod sounds any good. I listened to one in the store the other day and was very disappointed. Perhaps the earphones that come standard aren't up to snuff.

The standard earbuds are not very good on the iPod. Changing to a better setup greatly increases the sound quality.

does anyone know how to classify an audiobook as an AudioBook in the iPod? I cant seem to figure out how to get mine into the damn AudioBook menu instead of the normal music....

As far as I have been able to tell, audiobooks that you purchase are in a different format than regular mp3's or aac files. It is the formatting that tells iTunes and the iPod that it is an audiobook.

I would try putting them all in a playlist to distinguish them from the rest.

Whoa. I didn't know about the gap thing. I like to listen to classical music, and having stupid 3 second breaks everywhere would be very annoying. So thanks for bringing that up!

Depends on how much you want to spend. I have heard that these are great:

audiobooks on ipod - i think you have to buy the books from audible.com. otherwise, you can use your mac to fool your ipod into playing your files into that format. i don't have a mac, you'll have to search for this. i haven't been able to find a solution for pc.

i actually don't mind the earbuds with the ipod. maybe it's not quite as good as bose noise cancelling, but it's better than other headphones that i've had.

there is not a 3 second gap in mp3s. that is terrible, i'm not sure where you got such a pause. but the ipod does have a discernable break between tracks (maybe 50 ms). this is a notable drawback in my opinion. it's like a poorly burned CD on playback.

you can upload from ipod to computer. show hidden files and there they are. they are not in a particular order, though, so you may have to use your computer's search function to find all the tracks of a particular album.

I think all it takes is:
1) Re-encode the file to AAC format with iTunes (if necessary).
2) Rename the suffix from .m4a to .m4b
3) Drag the renamed file into iTunes.
4) Delete the references to the old files.

hmmm, i'd love to eat up every word you people say about the karma, and while i'm not a big 'looks person' the rio karma is the fugliest damn thing i've ever seen. I couldn't bear to own one just because i'd have to close my eyes to pick the thing up. I seriously cannot get past that, it really is that ugly.

Try the 5GB Rio Carbon then. $198 at 6ave.com. Cool little mamma-jamma.

There is a gap in MP3s; it's in the standard. It may not be as large as 3 seconds, depending on the implementation. Check out this site for more information and some tests with various players:

Actually, looking at it further, I'm not sure where I pulled 3 seconds from, that was just wrong :-) But there is some amount of silence to pad the end of the file.

Be sure to check out the discounts for students/teachers/faculty at the apple store.
Hey guys, I live in Australia, and there are NO apple stores that I know of. I am a student, is there anyone who

1) Has a decent ipod they want to sell, and they are in the Sydney Area

2) Where I can apply for a student discount on any of the Ipods?

Ok, from what I can tell the only difference other than appearance between these two is the size. Am I missing something? A 14 gig difference between them with a 30 dollar difference? Also this is my first serious research into the subject and am curious to know why one might choose a HD vs a flash memory one. I plan on using this at the gym and am curious to know if that kind of running and such might ruin it? Thanks. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1110265594499

The online Apple Store handles student discounts. They don't even confirm that you are actually a student. Just pick a school near to you if you aren't currently enrolled.

I live in NZ, and while there's no apple store, there are specialised area within an electronic store (can't remember which one). Maybe you can try finding one of those. Also has never heard of a student discount.
