New Firefox Release (V 1.0 RC1)

Surprised no one has posted this already, but the new 'Firefox release candidate' came out a couple of days ago. It has about 250 bug fixes, as well as integrated tabbed-browsing controls (replaces most of the functions of extensions like Tabbrowser Prefs and Single Window). It hasn't been added to Mozilla's main page yet, but it is on their ftp server.

You can get it here.

Scroll about halfway down the page and click the one labeled 'Firefox Setup (1.0rc1, en-US).exe 27-Oct-2004 16:12 4.7M'.

Be warned, it will break some of your extensions, but updated versions are already available for most of them.

Also, if you don't feel like messing with it just yet, the final version should be out in a couple of weeks.

Could you point me to that post please. I did do a search before posting and I just did a few more since reading your post. I didn't find anything. Maybe it's just me.

thanks, does it save the previous add-ins?

By the way, does anyone know of an Add-in to Firefox that allows you to grab a link, drag it to the right and have it open up in a new tab?? This is the only reason i still use MyIE2 (Maxthon) I would love to stop using it alltogether.

You can click and hold a link and drag it into the tab bar and it will open a new tab. This has been a feature for the past few releases.

Yes it does save them, as well as all other aspects of your profile. I installed V1.0 RC1 directly over V1.0 PR and everything went smoothly. If you are running an older version, I don't know how it will react.

There is an extension called 'Super Drag and Go' that does what you ask and a bit more. It can be found here. As you will see, it was designed to be similar to MyIE2's 'Super Drag & Drop.'

hmm, maybe I don't understand....what exactly are you describing and how is it different from dragging the link onto the tab bar?

EDIT: so...you get to drag it anywhere on the page as opposed to the tab bar? Why is it such a big difference?

Note: many of the plugins you have may not work at all under the latest release.

5/8 of mine did not function.

That's because Mozilla isn't publicizing this release. It is really for the testers only. Unless you enjoy playing with the nightlies (as I do), I'd recommend waiting until November 9, the scheduled release date.

Which will ROCK.

Man, I have been on 1.0 now for about a month and have yet to have a crash or any other sort of bug occur even once. I don't think I'll be upgrading till its a full-on release.

I can't belive I used IE for so long... seems handicapped now compared to the Fox.

Quickness, and ease of use, i guess.

with what I am talking about, you do not ahve to highlight the link, you can simply click and hold, drag to the right, and have the link open in a new tab.

thanks for the suggestion, i will check for that add-in

It looks like there might be a beta build here: mozdev.org - superdragandgo: installation.

In general, however, see Bumping extensions - The Extensions Mirror
Quote:
There are two ways to achieving this, the easiest is to change your app version.
- Type about:config in the addresbar
- Type app.extensions.version in the filterbar
- Rightclick the entry and choose modify
- Change 1.0 to 0.10

Another way is to do it like this:
Close Firefox,
open \%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\randomname\extensions\Extensions.rdf
and change maxVersion="0.10" to maxVersion="1.0" (there may be a few).

Now you can use all the old extensions smile.gif

The second way is to edit the extension itself, known as repackaging/bumping.

- Open the extension (*.xpi) (you can use any archive program)
- Find the install.rdf file
- Open it with a normal text editor (no word/wordpad, just plain simple notepad)
- Find the line that says <maxversion>0.x</maxversion>
- Change the number to 1.0
- Save and update the archive

Now you got yourself a repacked/bumped extension that will install on a 1.0 build
Last step is to send the repack to sboulema@gmail.com, so others can use it

It isn't really much of a difference, but the extension offers other features as well. You can save an image by dragging it anywhere on the page. You can also do a web search for a word or phrase by highlighting it and dragging it anywhere on the page.

The only thing I hate about RC1 is that my new mouse's "back" button doesn't work. (Logitech MX 1000 Laser)
