Newb question regarding domain registration
well, i want MrYid.com, which is totally unclaimed, as i cna tell. though i do have a really sweet server, i do not have nearly enough badwidth to host a site (im on 56k... meh) so i would like to have outside hosting. so, could someone link me to a site that can do this? i know plenty of places that offer sites on their own domain, but i want my own!
let me know, thanks

if you have your own server, you may be looking for a place to house this server? look into server co-location.
two webhosts that i've dealt with and have had success are rackshack.net and cihost.com if you want to register your domain with a registrar, look at dotster.com |

Server collocation can be costly - it's probably cheaper for you to host the box at home with a 384/1.5 DSL connection. If you want the box up 99+% of the time (which may be a problem for a typical home), you're going to have to spend the $$$ for collocation.
There are places offering inexpensie collocation but they always have a catch - usually bandwidth. They may only offer cheap 1U of rack space which means you need to buy a new case. Probably not worth it. Good luck.

I don't use dreamhost, but i've heard they can be very good for those not experianced in the technical details of a site.
dreamhost
Start small with a company like thisd and only change when you need better / upgraded resources.

i can't say for hosting, but i know for domain management, i use domainmonger.com
i've been using it for almost a year now and have had no complaints. they offer hosting packages as well you may want to check out. but like i said, i've never used their hosting solutions. good luck with that. and let us know where you ended up hosting with. good hosts are a nice thing to be aware of. you can never have too many good references. |
