[SOLVED] (WinXP) Desktop tab in display control panel has disappeared. Any ideas?
 

As the title says... It's not there anymore. Right clicking the desktop and choosing "Properties" just takes me to the themes tab.

Anyone know how to bring this tab back?

EDIT:
I solved the problem. On WinXP SP2 you use regedit and change HK_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Explorer > Policies > Explorer > ClassicShell - Set to "0".

Hopefully that will help others if they run intot he same problem.

What tabs are you left with? And also, what kind of video card do you have? Does your video card have it's own software to manage it?

Themes - Screen Saver - Appearance - Settings.

I'm sure it's not a video card thing. It's been there forever just all of a sudden has disappeared.

Did you install any anti-spyware software that might be 'protecting' the desktop?

Is it your home system or a work system? The tabs can be hidden by registry policies settings.

It's my home system. I have not installed anything in quite a while. I did though, use a tweakui like program a few days ago. I'm not sure if this caused it or not.

Check this out, if it is due to group policy, this will help you check to see and possibly restore it. The problem is, if it's group policy and you don't have admin privileges then you will not be able to change it anyway.

That didn't work. I didn't have those settings in the window, even logged on as an administrator.

that almost sounds like you have been group policied

check your local security policy

start --> run --> gpedit.msc
ummm as for a guess
try looking under user config
admin templates
desktop
there are a few options there
aslong as none are actually enabled , thats one thing out of the way , or at least you may use this to forcefully enable such options

user configuration
-- > control panel
---> display
'Hide Desktop tab'
either see if its been altered from not configured defaults
and/or consider forcing it off
be careful in group policy, make sure you read and understand the switch you are altering
