Can someone point to me or tell me, based on buying experience, what brand of DVD - R is good? I'm looking to purchase one and I'm not getting any leads that are better than others.

Get the NEC one from New Egg, check the other post about them here.
If you mean the discs, go with Verbatim

If you are talking about blanks, besides Verbatim, anything made in japan is also good.
Personally I buy the Ritek stuff because of good quallity and decent price. I usually buy the riteks off of newegg.
