Is P2P dead?

Napster died a long time ago; as did Kazaa and WinMX. Are there any current alternatives?
P.S. If there is a thread about this already, my utmost apologies.

Ah, I will look into BitTorrent. Thank you! First I need to find a non-pay site though.

Sorry bout that, fixed the link. Accidently put .com instead of .org, and the .com is a ripoff site.

Suprnova is a godsend . You can get everything there. Missed a TV show? Don't worry, it's there. Unfortunately, I belive the authorities will be (if not already) setting their sights on this medium shortly.

The P2P model is nearly perfect. It's the ultimate 'on demand' service. If they charged a fee, I'd pay.

Not only is WinMX not dead, the new version that was just released is better than ever. The key to using WinMX is (1) configuring it properly and (2) becoming familiar with its admittedly complex user interface so that you can develop an aggressive search and download strategy. If I can't find a file on WinMX, I try the search on SoulSeek. Between the two, I have a 100% success rate in finding and downloading every file I want.

Try kazaa lite resurection. I use that and bit torrent. Also, try DC++ if you have a lot of stuff to share (there are minimum share requirements)

Well i may be a bit paranoid, especially after getting a "Cease and Desist" from MGM, but i'm having trouble hitting the P2Ps anymore. Granted you should be fine as long as you don't leave them up and uploading to other people, but i'm just not that crazy about them. My issues with BitTorrent is that it tracks your IP, and it's really really easy for "them" to track you down.

If you want stuff, and don't mind putting in the time to figure it out, I'd check out newsgroups.....a good easy client is Newsbin Pro

http://www.newsbin.com/

All you gotta find out is your local ISP's newsgroup server (could be something along the lines of news.ISPNAME.com) and then start downloading. It's good for you.

I will never use Kazaa again, after using Bit Torrent and Soulseek its sooooo slow...

In about the same time it takes to download 1 song off Kazaa I can get 1 CD off Bit Torrent.

Bittorrents are awesome but sometimes it's extremely difficult to get a file cause there are few seeders and whatnot for it.

I'm honestly surprised no one has mentioned Shareaza yet. It connects to many P2P networks, including Gnutella, Guntella 2, EDonkey2000, and Bit Torrent. Personally, I suggest you use a stand-alone Bit Torrent client, but that's just my opinion.

Make sure your going to Suprnova.org, not suprnova.com or .net...

.com and .net are scam laden pay sites...

Kazaa Lite is great from Home, Ares for up at school, Azureus is my BitTorrent downloader
(there are many other ones you can use to download Torrents, Azureus seems the best).
SoulSeek I really didn't sit down to try out, but my one friend up here swears by it.

As far as I know, there is also Kazaa Lite Resurrection, which is headed up by some guy
from Russia. And for Torrent, use Suprnova.org, like everyone else said, there's no site
that even compares to it to my knowledge. You won't have trouble downloading anything
except the most obscure/non-mainstream stuff... I love it.

any public torrent site, anybody can watch what IP's are downloading which files.

I don't like that at all.

better to join a torrent site, where you have to agree to terms that you're not one of "them"....and there are never "fake" files, or poor quality. faster too.

IRC is probably the best resource for anything, except for a lot of stuff you really have to know where to go in order to get it. Packetnews is a great resource, but if you stick with a solid group long enough, a number of people are able to get rips of tons of older stuff. TV is the only thing that I find Bittorrent really excelent at as I'm not too happy with the groups that release TV on IRC. Hrmm..maybe I should do something about that...

There are a few threads like this where I've said the same thing, but here's another vote for BitTorrent and eMule. BitTorrent is one of the best ideas out there, especially for fast transferring of new content. By design eMule and especially the new experimental serverless sister client Kademlia (Kad, which comes enabled by default on the new emule) will have the most longevity.

Torrents are usually more short-lived -- they rely on a lot of participants, popular content, and the reliability of servers. They also tend to be faster since all participants are constantly active. Sure eMule is slow compared to BT, but the fact that you get credit for uploading and often end up uploading more or just as much as you download ensures that content won't die. It's also got a rating system to flag fake or foreign-language content which is cool. And Kad is bad ass -- it doesn't rely on servers, as every participating client acts as a mini-server that each does a small part. You can read about it here, the design is very well thought-out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kademlia
