PCI based RAM-Drive?
 

Does anyone remember the PCI cards which would allow you to put SDRAM on them and turn it into a RAM-Based HD? It's been a year or two since I've seen them but I recently came into a lot of old SDRAM that I can't use for anything else.

Anybody seen these anywhere?

For the price of that thing, you might as well buy a new system with a mainboard that supports as much ram as you want to stick in it. $699 buys a nice system these days. Besides, RAM on a PCI bus? That'd be rather slow. Not much better than a real HDD in fact, unless you're doing lots of little reads/writes all the time.

Scorpion23, I'd sell that RAM before it becomes worthless. It's not worth your time or money to extend its lifetime.

Mr Mephisto: I had seen that, but as oberon said it's too expensive to be worth it. I don't remember the ones I'd seen being that high but I guess I'll never know.

bendsley: That looks cool, but at $150 for 64MB why not just get a small HD and load linux on it.

Yeah ... I don't think you'd gain anything on a PCI slot. But there are solid state RAM drives that kick ass as far as speed goes.

They faded away for a reason like all things do. For storage (hard drive) an IDE hard drive per GB is cheaper then ram per GB. For computer memory the PCI bus is too slow and illogical when compared to the system bus on the computer, PCI bus speed being 33Mhz and todays motherboard bus's speed being 400Mhz, 533Mhz, 800Mhz and still going up.
