We need more information.
What are you trying to do? What protocols are available to you? What kind of firewall is it? |

Yeah, I have the same problem at my school(for kazaa, I haven't tried video cam), so I need to know if it is illegal to bypass the firewall also.
|
Most likely, if your school or office set up a firewall - then you've accepted some kind of Acceptable Use Guidelines in order to use their connection.
One of those guidelines normally is that you don't try to find a way around the security measures they put in place to protect the office/school network. |
Damn, that sucks. I would really like to have kazaa, but I don't want to lose the Internet for a year(that's the punishment for breaking usage guidelines).
|
Well, there's your answer Mage. :)
You could always simply purchase broadband for your personal use at home. Also, WildWeeds, trying to bypass a school/college firewall is one thing, but doing it where you work? Do you like your job? Because that's one way to lose it pretty damn quick. Mr Mephisto |
I'm too damn broke to afford broadband. So I guess I'm stuck getting stuff off other computers on the network( I'm not hacking, the stuff is in shared folders).
|
i usually go on field works, so i just wanted the my kazaa to be downloading things for me when im out.
yeah, i think mephisto is right. the best thing is to get ourselves a broadband instead of using the office or school computers. thanks for the advise, wild weeds |
why not try a better peer to peer client, such as shareaza? it's a little harder to use, but the networks it connects too include gnutella, gnutella2000, and edonkey. it also has a built in bittorrent client, and a HUGE selection of files (puts the fast track network to shame). while it is widely used, it hasn't gotten nearly the publicity many other p2p client have, leading me to believe that it would probably not be blocked on a school or office network. just a suggestion, hope it helps

P2P...in a work setting? Generally, you'll not need anything from a P2P network at your work. I imagine storing any material not work related, unless the company just doesn't give a crap, is grounds to get you in trouble. At my old work, they considered that stealing bandwidth which could get you fired. At my old school, you'd get your network connection booted for a period if you stole a lot of bandwidth during the school day.
Also, why do you need to use a WebCam at work? Other then for personal reasons? |
actually, you can do this during lunch time and break,
anyway the company really doesnt care as long as your able to finish up all your work. wild weeds |
I'm sure they'd care when they get a cease and desist letter from the RIAA/MPAA. *shrugs*

Man....
The firewall is there for a reason. The company doesn't want you wasting their bandwidth downloading crap with p2p clients. Firewalls typically log everything that they block. Do you really want to be red flagged by the IT staff? IT professionals really hate users who don't stay below their radar. Don't be that guy. The rules are the rules, follow them. |
Damn... Another one of these threads...
OK, Ill summarize it for you: Sure, you can get through the firewall, at least for a little while. But remember, the network admins taking care of that firewall know more about it than you probably ever will, and they will catch you eventually. And when that happens, don't count on having that job anymore. So basically, dont do it--its a losing proposition. |
Where I work, we use a PIX and Websense to block content for our users. They have also signed and dated an Acceptable Use Policy that we keep on file. It does specifically states in there that abuse of the AUP can lead up to termination. Remember, the firewall is there for a reason. To keep people, like yourself, from doing dumbshit things, like you want to do.

Speaking as a professional network admin - I strongly suggest you follow Bacon's fine advice. Piss off your sysadmin, and you'll live to regret it. Check out the BOFH archives at www.theregister.co.uk for an inkling of what could happen to you... ;-)
If you want to infest a computer with spyware and trojans, please stick to one you own. |
Be careful, topics like these are TABOO here in the cmputer forum.
On the other hand, I've got some freshly cracked porn for ya though  |
this discussion has run it's course....
