those don't look like fakes, but what's everyone's opinion? to me it looks pretty damn sleek, almost like a TV, which makes me wonder if it can double as TV.. we'll see. although it's a nice design it's nothing revolutionary, nice though, nice.

I don't... understand. Is that the whole thing? It looks like a monitor to me. In a nice box. I see nothing particularly iMacish about it.

If that's a fake, it's from someone who has been following the Apple rumor sites. From what I've read, the above image could very well be legit. The new G5 iMacs have the motherboard and computer geeky stuff mounted behind the display, creating a sleek TV stye comp.

Does it look iMacish? No. Does it scream Mac? You bet.

From engadget.com...

The saga continues: Those pics of the new G5 iMac that were supposedly snapped in an elevator at Charles de Gaulle airport outside of Paris? That was a hoax. The guy behind the pics has admitted that it was just a 20-inch LaCie LCD stuffed into a PowerBook box. Nice try, though.

oh okay thank goodness, i was a little worried 'cos i was expecting a lot more of a "wow factor" from apple. we'll find out hopefully on tuesday, august 31st.

I win. Good game.

This wasn't a hoax after all.

It was a hoax, all right. It just happened to be pretty close to the truth.

I've read some of the stories, and while Apple's spokespeople are of course talking it up as a good machine, they're presenting it more as a lifestyle/home entertainment item than as a computer. A couple of the interviewees went on about how the small size and non-computeroid "look" would be at home in a stylish living room -- much more so than the standard boxlike PC and monitor. Apparently they even managed to cram the power supply inside that little enclosure.

Will this be a successful approach? Who knows? The think sure costs enough. What would really be fun is if you could put it into some kind of short-term sleep mode, unplug it, then carry it somewhere else in the house, plug it in there, and resume. Put that together with wireless networking and you'd have a desktop computer that you could move around the house at will instead of being tied to a particular desk.

Welcome the new G5 iMac

The Mac Expo in France has introduced the new Apple G5 iMac.

Let us bask in its glory.

This isn't exactly a new idea... Gateway had a model like this over a year ago.

Of course, it didn't have that inherent Apple sexiness.

seems to me your talking about a tablet PC...

SiphonX 09-01-2004 04:46 PM

it's actually not that expensive, with the apple student/business discount the 17" 1.6 ghz will set you back 1199. something that blows my mind on the other hand is how a 20" cinema display costs 1299 while a 20" iMac G5 costs just 600 dollars more than the display itself. only real let down is that 512 megs of ram isn't the apple standard and the low end video card. i'd buy one but my pc that's three years old is 1.8 ghz w/ 512ram and 128 mb video card, so it'll be a downgrade. but hopefully this pc can last me another three years to hold me over 'til the 4th generation iMac comes out in 2007.
