Windows mysteriously shutting down

OS: Win XP Pro
Mem: 768 MB DDR PC3200 Ram
HDD(Primary): Hitachi 80 GB
HDD2(Secondary): Maxtor 200GB
VideoCard: Radeon 9800 XT
CDRW Drive: Lite on
Mobo: Albatron KT600 Pro

First problem: Computer doesn't run Post test, monitor displays "no signal", no beeps during startup.

The first thing I do is open up the comp case, check that none of the wires got knocked loose. I replace the cover...restart machine, and their is no change in status.

Next I suspect that the cmos battery is run out of juice. I pull the battery out, and start tapping on the battery, maybe a little life is left in it. Put the battery in, and turn on comp. and ta-da, it works. Post test is running, I hear some familiar beeps, so I now know what I need to do--Change the Battery. Wrong Answer, as I soon found out.

I changed the cmos battery, and still it's not working. Now there's another problem.

Second Problem: Now I can logon onto my computer, but after less than 2 min. everything shutsdown. No errors are displayed.

I have both a software and hardware firewall, I have a Antivirus, with the latest updates. I also, download the windows patches, and security updates, and what not.

What should I do next? Help!

Couple of quick solutions...

Did you just upgrade a video driver? Roll it back.

What power supply are you running? May have fried?

Did you just add new hardware? Might have overloaded you power supply...

First off that is what I would check..

Are all your fans running? Almost sounds heat related.

I had this problem last summer when a power supply started to go.

Get an ATX power supply tester and check yours, or just replace it. If you leave it, it will eventually eat your motherboard. Trust me. It won't get better, only worse.

It does sound like it could be the power supply, but it wasn't I think?

After all that crap about having all the latest antivirus updates, and window updates, and a firewall, it turns out that it was a virus.

In order to get windows going, I had to remove my 2nd hdd otherwords windows wouldn't boot (maybe this is related to the power supply?).

Next as soon as I would log-in I would try to run a virus scan. About less than a minute into the virus scan the video would cut out, but the hdd light would still be running.

I then wanted to find out if the hdd was still running or if everything was just frozen, so I rebooted, and this time open media player, and started a song. Then I opened up my antivirus program, and ran it. 45 seconds later, again the video went out, and the song stopped and sounded like a long awful screech.

I then tried uninstalling and installing a new antivirus, and one of the first things that any antivirus program will do before installing it onto your computer is scan for viruses. Well apparently whatever this virus was, didn't like that, and decided to shut the video and I guess freeze everything up.

After I rebooted, I decided to check all the running tasks in the background, nothing was amiss.

It looks like this virus, was pretty intelligent, and was designed to crap out your system as soon as it is threatened, by such things as a virusscan. I then started to look for a antivirus that can run from command prompt, but I was so aggitated by this time, and I had spent over 2 hours looking for something, that I decided to give up & start backing up.

I then spent the next 3 hours backing data, not knowing if any of the files I was backing up, had this virus or not.

I then reformatted everything, installed windows again. So far I can't even bring myself to install all those programs again.

Im kind of glad that I reformatted, because, I could of ignored it, and everything would be fine, the proof being that I spent about 3 hours of backing up data and my machine was fine, it didn't even shutdown, but the thing is it would always be in the back of my mind, and I wouldn't be able to rest.
