This is really irking me. I cant get any sound to come out of my speakers and I have no idea why, because between the last time they were working and when they stopped working I didnt change a thing. My system volume is all the way up, the speakers are on and turned up, every media player I have is turned up, everything is plugged in correctly into the right jacks, but the best I can get for sound is a fuzzy noise when i turn the speaker all the way up.... which is normal when theres nothing playing. However, I have been using various programs and havent been getting anything as far as sound is concerned. I use my PC's onboard sound btw. I plugged headphones in and still nothing doing. Any idea at all what could be the problem?

Does your sound card have a setting for digital vs analog sound?

I have made that mistake before.

My sound *card* only allows analog.

That being said, I don't use the card, only the computer's onboard sound which you can't edit the settings of. Even if there were a setting, I didnt touch it.

Have you tried reinstalling the sound driver? I remember that some older hardware used to have problems like that and reinstalling the sound drivers fixed it, other then that make sure that the bios settings are correct and the sound is enabled.

What? Then how did you try to reinstall them?

I'm confused. But yeah, I've had this happen with onboard sound before. I don't really know why. That would be my first bet, is to reinstall drivers.

Next is a question... why don't you use your sound card? Have you tried plugging your speakers into your card? Some motherboards will only allow you to use one or the other, and if it somehow got switched, the data might be being sent to the sound card, rather than the onboard audio. Dunno.

If you can give some info about your pc, we can try to locate the correct drivers for you. (i.e. if you know what company/model the pc is or the manufacturer/model of the motherboard).
I know that compaq pc's tend to use soundmax as the onboard sound, but intel and via are also popular choices for onboard sound.

You can always try going into the deice manager to see what is currently listed as your soundcard/chip it will usually give you enough info to start searching on.

MooseMan3000: I've tried about everything to get the sound card to work, nothing doing. All I can figure is that my speakers arent compatible, which sounds odd, but it seems like theres 2 jacks on the sound card thing that i have nothing that fits for. One is a thing that sticks out and is threaded, so something must screw onto it. One is one of those trapezoidal thingies with little holes in it like the one for a monitor, but it's yellow.

EDIT: well I clicked in this little widget in my systray and it told me which codec i needed. problem is, I dled the zip file and I have no idea where to begin because there's no readme.

AAAAUGH ok, well i tried to take a screenshot and it didn't work. Here's the files that I get in the zip file:

Wowee.

Well, KWSN, that yellow weird jack is for Dolby, I believe. My sound card has that, and if I recall correctly, that connects to my subwoofer, and the black and green are for front and back speakers. It's too dark down here to check. Heh.

When I want to just use 2 speakers, there's a SEPARATE jack for that. I kind of want to say that's a different shade of green, but I'm not sure. Do you know what model sound card you have by any chance?


Alright, and for drivers... you're not looking for a "codec." Those are for audio/video compression/decompression. You're looking for a driver. To find what sound card you have and what driver you need, device manager would be fastest. If you don't know how to get there, let us know which OS you have, and someone can give you a walkthrough. Or, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, I can give you a more detailed explanation.

Oh, I just looked at your new edit.

Alright, the .sys file is the driver itself (I'm pretty sure. Someone back me up on this one?) Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to install it without a separate installer.

Do you know which soundcard or what motherboard you have so we can see if we can find drivers for the sound?

OK.... that was bizarre.

After clicking about 999999999999 things I found a control panel for my device and all sound categories except "Wave" were turned up. I turned it up and, voila, sound.

I have no idea why that would have gotten turned down, as i've never seen it before.

heh, that happens sometimes. Every once in a while some random program will take precedence and turn down one thing. I spent like 5 hours trying to figure out why my microphone didn't work, only to find that a random volume thing had been turned off. So... glad you solved it
