fixing a joystick

Hey guys, I was wondering whether I should try tackling the problems with my old joystick (and it is rather old, I think 5 years now) or get a new one. I really dont want to get a new model because this one has been really good for me and I'm very VERY used to its arrangement of buttons. The problem is that certain buttons are so worn out that you have to press REEEEEALLLLL hard for them to respond, and they don't click anymore. Here's a pic of the model I have (It's a Logitech Wingman Extreme) with the fucked-up buttons highlighted:

So if theres any way to fix it, i'd appreciate guidance, and if I should get a new one, I'd appreciate suggestions of similar models.

Thanks in advance.

I'd say pull it apart, clean the contacts and see if their are any obvious problems, the worse thing that happens is that you can't fix it, nothing ventured, nothing gained

the switches can be replaced, BUT:

Consider the X-Y axis. Not too long before that starts getting jittery on you. In other words, is it worth your time to replace them?

I had a Wingman which was a generation or two older than yours.

You may be able to put shims of some sort between the buttons and the microswitches that they hit...if the gap is really big, you can supergloo jumper caps to them.

The whole thing is...whether the problem is the buttons or those microswitches...which you pretty much can't repair. If you're a lot better with a soldering iron than I am, you might be able to replace the switches.

I have a Kraft joystick in my collection which is older than some members of this board...it has a Y on the end of the cable...one connector for a PC, the other for an Apple II...it is made with keyswitches rather than microswitches.

i took the mufugger apart and it was actually the microswitches that were fucked, so i scrapped it. Guess it's time for a new one.

If it's at all possible, I'd love to get a brand new model of the one I had. I guess I'll skim ebay

I had one of those until the movers lost it a couple years ago. That thing was a tank. You just can't destroy them.

*grin* That's probably pretty accurate. It's amazing how in my last move some of the cooler electronics I had disappeared
