XM Radio - XMPCR
 

I just bought an XMPCR. I couldn't resist. I found an online store selling for $44.xx. With shiping it was $51 something.

What really sold me was that they usually ship orders before 3pm on the same day _and_ they're in Brooklyn so i should have it on Tuesday.


Man, I am jazzed. I can't wait to wired that puppy up!

I have XM in my SUV. I always said I would never pay for Radio but, i like it and glad I did.

I got it a few months after I bought a new car back in Aug '01, had it for about 6 months. I enjoyed it, but I found myself listening to it less and less, so I canceled. I liked it, and may actually look into getting it again in the near future.

I spent a signifigant portion of my ill-spent youth listening to shortwave radio broadcasts. I had a old portable Zenith multi-band with tubes that used a battery as big as loaf of bread.

Broadcasters would frequently send you a "QSL" card to acknowledge your reception reports. I don't know if they still do it, though. But I had fun doing it and now find that I enjoy the radio quite a bit... Except for the fact that the only decent rock station is a ClearChannel piece of crap commercial ridden, cancerous, demon spawned bit of putrid garbage whose DJ's egos are thousand times greater than Hannibal Lector's, yet only having the appeal and intellect of a coprse.

Forgive me, but what is an XMPCR?

My brother has Sirius in his car, and that rocks!
Over 100 channels all commericial free. although they constantly tell you 'your listening to sirius channel blah always commercial free'
which I dont know if thats a commercial or now :)
but I like it it beats out the radio in my city (which sucks) and is a great tool for hearing great new songs and remembering the classics.

I got a XM ready Pioneer head unit in my 96 Taurus and the gf bough5t me the Pioneer receiver and an antenna for Christmas last year, and I have never looked back. Local radio sucks here in Columbus, OH and I think it is probably the best $10/month I have spent in a LOOONG time. The sound has been excellent with the occaisional static under a bridge or something but other than that, no complaints, added to the fact that in March of this year they went 100% commercial free on all the music stations make it all that much more better.

XMPCR is an XM Satellite radio that works with a computer. It uses a USB connection for power and tuning. The software that comes with it kinda clunky, so I'm using XtremePCR, which is fantastic.

Previously, I'd been spending ripping my CDs and bringing them to work on CDR. No more. Ripping CDs and collecting MP3s on a PC is like saving porn pictures: No matter how many you have, you always find something else and it never ends. Why bother?

XMPCR lets me hear a better assortment of all types of music, commercial free. Yep. No more Lasik commercials, no more commercials for TrimSpa, hair loss clinics, no more eogitical DJs who think that their sparkling personalities are more important that the music they play. And then there's news, talk, radio plays, etc.

XM Radio rocks. At $10 a month, it's the best money I've spent in ages.

I thought about getting it when we finally moved to the lower 48 from Alaska (can't get it up there, we're not important enough) but I decided that I couldn't justify buying it because I don't spend a lot of time driving back and forth.

Driving? XMPCRs attach to a PC ;-)

You can get XMs that hook directly to a stereo. Cruise by xmradio.com and check the links to dealers. The number of available radios is tremendous.

I use my XMPCR from work and I'm thinking about another one for my home PC.

It's really changed my listening habits quite a bit. No more commercials. No more asinine egotisitcal DJ "personalities," just nice tunes. I listen to more new music than I have in the past, too. The selection is excellent.

so after you pay for this and you have digital cable which also has commercial free music... do you just cancel the digital cable part or just keep it because it has other channels that also seem to be worthwhile too?

The digital cable from Comcast hasn't impressed me very much. Especailly with the glut of "reality" shows and competition/team shows: cooking, designing, building, whatever. So the video portion of their offering is essentially worthless to me. If it weren't for the Western Channel, I would have cancelled already. I like cowboy movies (Don't tell anyone).

The music they provide is okay, but it's one channel at a time. You pick a genre, and that's that. You listen. I think it's actually just a long loop. I've noticed the classic rock and oldies channels seem to play tunes in the same order over a few days. XM has a better playlist, IMHO.

The PC-based XM radio allows me to see what's playing on all the channels and has the added benefit of popping little alert messages on to the screen that can inform me when artists or songs that I've designated as favorites are on. I can honestly say that having this XMPCR has completely changed my listening habits.

I still hear the rock that I love, but I also have begun listening to more new artists than ever before. The artists who I "watch" for also pop up on "Mix" or "blend" or "decade" channels. After their song finishes, I usually keep listening there so I get to hear others who I would not have heard otherwise. I've found a number of new favorites this way.

There's Sirius, as well, they carry NPR (an exclusive deal) but there was no PC-based soloution available so XM was my choice by default. It's worked out well for me and I'm more than happy. My next vehicle will have factory XM.

Being a Columbus native I know what you mean. I'll see the occasional bit of static when driving underneath trees and in drive thru's as well. Not sure if it's just my antenna or not (Terk XMicro mounted on my trunk) but it's way better than the ClearChannel crap that's here in town.

Terminal crotch rot is better than clear channel.

I'm ordering a Roady II today.
